One example of speciesism would be mousetraps. I, for one, am terrified and disgusted by rats, which would sadly make me a speciesist. Majority of people fear rats and mice, but would do anything to get them out of their houses. We set up mousetraps for our own interests, which would be to get them out. Although we succeed with the traps, the mice suffer whether they’re whole body is stuck on the glue of the trap, leaving them unable to move at all or their bodies are snapped with old-fashioned traps. In each case, we do not seem to care about how the mice feel because they were intruders in our home and getting them out would benefit us tremendously. We also do not think about other ways to remove the rat without harming them. Singer feels

“This is a beautiful example of the reality that conscious, awake and aware humans have always been here.” (Gardner) Mark Twain has placed everything very straight forward and clear way about what humans do to other humans. I think the major idea in this piece was telling people how these so-called lower animals can leave together when they are totally different species, but humans being the same species can not leave together or to help each other out just for the sake of doing it. Mark Twain uses a lot of rhetorical situations to compare humans to lower animals.…

Singer introduces two new hypothetical situations pertaining to ‘Dora’ and ‘Bob’ in order to generate a reaction from the readers. He relates the two stories with Americans who are not donating by saying “Bob's situation resembles that of people able but unwilling to donate to overseas aid” (Singer 381). This argument shows the potentiality of a straw man fallacy where singer constructs a character so unfavorable that the readers would have to choose the other option given. But there are factors to be considered such as the amount of tax ‘Bob’ hypothetically paid for the Bugatti which goes to welfare. In addition, anyone working hard for their income has the right to enjoy it.…

In his essay, “Speciesism and the Equality of Animals,” Peter Singer argues that the standard for having a right to get equal consideration as others is the species’ “capacity for suffering and enjoyment” (205), and therefore, a species which satisfies the standard should be protected from speciesism. Speciesism is “a prejudice or attitude of bias toward the interests of members of one’s own species and against those of members of other species” (204). Singer states that many people’s voices arguing that intelligence cannot justify racism and sexism bring speciesism towards animals into…

Even though it may seem like the two would have nothing in common, when one digs deeper into John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, a story taking place during the Great Depression, the two characters share striking similarities. Lennie Small (a troubled migrant worker) and Curley’s wife ( the flirtatious wife of the farm owner’s son), two seemingly opposites, surprisingly have much in common. Though both have unattainable dreams and are prejudiced against, Lennie has a support system, and only Curley’s wife, with no support system, realizes how unrealistic her dream is.…
