The first story I want to bring to your attention is “Young Goodman Brown”. I believe that it is in the end his own judgmental ways that ultimately destroy him. As the story begins, Goodman Brown lets his wife know of an errand that he must go on that takes place in Salem forest. He must have forgotten that we are taught not to judge others. He ended up miserable and paranoid after his trip to the woods. Being a judgmental person often does not help the person passing judgement or the one being judged. It usually has negative results for all parties. A person who has such high standards for everyone in life usually ends up alone because they cannot be happy. The grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find’ is judgmental throughout the story. She has her own distorted view of what good is. Her morals and the way she defines good and bad were shaped from her past and will negatively impact her whole family’s future. It is difficult to refrain from being judgmental at times. Being opinionated and having beliefs is perfectly acceptable. Not every individual will share the same beliefs or opinions. We can also share facts without forcing them on another person. One last word of wisdom to help fight the urge to judge others, when you notice a weakness that a person displays, rather than judge them for their shortfall, stop and recall a weak moment in your own life.
