Comparing Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And The Outsiders

Decent Essays
Many stories reflect a work of Shakespeare’s in some way or another. One story that I remember comparing to Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, was “The Outsiders”. Both center around two groups that despise each other, in “Romeo and Juliet” it was the Montagues and the Capulets, and in “The Outsiders” those groups are the Socs and the Greasers. One theme in Shakespeare’s play is that hatred and fighting will bring tragedies. This is evident when Johnny dies in the book. Also another theme that is in “Romeo and Juliet” is the importance of family. After the deaths of Johnny and Dally, Ponyboy comes to the realization that family is one of the most precious gifts a person can have.

The two versions of William Shakespeare's timeless tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by Zeffirelli and Luhrmann are similar in many ways. One of the ways that the two versions is that Zeffirelli and Luhrmann both use the same coloring in the uniforms that the Montagues and Capulet families wear. Ex, The Montagues has an orange uniform, and Capulet’s has a purple uniform in Zeffirelli’s film, and Montagues has an orange car, and Capulet has an purple car in Luhrman's film. Another way the two versions are the same, is that they both use the same wording. Ex, “No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you sir; but I bite my thumb, sir.”…

Two texts can seem so similar on the surface but could end up being quite different as you explore their depths. This is shown through the contrast in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Taylor Swift’s Love Story by the use of literary devices and their vastly different structures to express the theme of love. In Romeo and Juliet, imagery was used far more to convey the love that the protagonists felt for each other while in Taylor Swift’s Love Story, repetition was more commonly employed. “It’s a love story, baby just say ‘YES’”…
