Fathers play different roles in every child's life. Some teach directly, while others teach by example. Those who teach by example are likely to make a strong impact on the lives of their children by indirectly instilling values and morals in them. As the father lives his life the son watches closely and picks up the mannerisms of his father. Seamus Heaney and Li-Young Lee both wrote about their relationships with their fathers, and how their fathers' teachings both by example and action made a positive impact on their adulthood. Born to a family of hard working farmers, Seamus Heaney was the pioneer of his traditional Irish family. In stark contrast to his father and grandfather, Seamus Heaney was a poet. Captivating the young boy, Lee’s father uses a strong, comforting voice described as “still, a well/ of dark water, a prayer (Lee line 7-9). The description of Lee’s father’s voice gives the poem a deep, caring tone. As the speaker, Li-Young Lee, is mesmerized by the story, his father yanks the splinter out of his son’s hand and gives the splinter to him. The splinter that is given to Lee symbolizes the gift he has been given by his father. “Had you followed that boy/ you would have arrived here/ where I bend over my wife’s right hand” (Lee lines 18-20). Boys whose fathers love them and demonstrate that love in consistent, caring ways have fewer issues later in life with peers, (related to school and learning), and irresponsible, illegal behavior (htt). Charles Bragg and Westley Moore were major influences in their son’s lives because of their lack of presence, how they treated their mothers, and their affect as positive or negative role models for their sons. They often contribute the most to their children’s lives by shaping them into individuals who share beliefs and attitudes akin to their guardians. In his letter of advice written to his faraway son, Lord Chesterfield reveals his own personal values that he attempts to pass on through the use of figurative language, irony, and parallel structure. He hardly even acknowledges her presence these days” (de la Peña, ch. 5). This situation shows how Danny’s actions and interactions with his mother, are directly influenced by the actions of his dad. Another situation in which a parent influences their child through their own actions, is in The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver.…

Throughout time there have been numerous authors who have come and gone with little to no effect on society. Today, however, we remember an amazing poet named Seamus Heaney, who left a lasting impression on the hearts of many. In his poems: “Death of a Naturalist,” “Requiem for the Croppies,” “Mid-Term Break” and “Scaffolding” there is indisputable evidence supporting the recurring motif of nature. The role of nature in Heaney’s poems is greatly linked to his Celtic roots.…
