Comparing Roy Hobbs And King Arthur

Decent Essays
I believe that Roy Hobbs is similar to King Arthur in quite a few ways. When analised they both possess lots of the traits that a hero would have, but more on that later. These men both are men that we all have aspirations to be more like. Determination and integrity are qualities that these two men have in abundance. For Arthur his determination shows through the way he fights and doesn't give up on the people he tries to save. For Hobbes his determination towards his one desire to play baseball is almost frightening. Hobbs even when faced with the reality that he won't be the best and his motivations don’t seem to be there he still plays baseball to the point where he would almost die. Integrity too, Arthur stood up for what he wanted even

The movie may show that Roy Hobbs does just have “natural, God-given” talent, since every time he came up to the plate it was either a big home run or a strike out. But, Roy did have to work hard to get where he wanted be in life. After his near fatal altercation with Harriet Bird, it took Hobbs more than 15 years to finally to get back to where he started in the beginning when he was 19. He had to work hard not only physically but also mentally to get back into baseball that finally led him to the Knights. There are many heroes in today’s society. Every person can have a different definition of what defines someone as a hero or something as heroic. Grant Wiggins, a local school teacher in A Lesson Before Dying and Jefferson’s friend, has his own definition of what it means to be a hero. It is arguable that there are two predominant heroic characters in the The Crucible, a drama written by Arthur Miller, and in A Lesson Before Dying, a historical fiction written by Ernest J. Gaines, John Proctor and Jefferson. John Proctor is the protagonist in The Crucible whose town is afflicted by the witch trials in 1692, and Jefferson is a main character in A Lesson Before Dying who is a black man on death row in the 1940s south.…
