The character that was the most different from play to movie was one of the protagonists, Romeo. For one, he is happier in the beginning of the movie than in the play. In both, Benvolio finds Romeo moping, but rather than whining to his friend about his despair like in the play, he banters the lines with him, plays pool, and is much less pathetic. He is also much less pathetic later in the film when he is banned from Verona. Rather than throwing himself on the floor, weeping into the cobblestones, he’s pretty serious, stoic, etc. He seems heart-broken, but not in hysterics. He is in hysterics later, however, when he is told of Juliet’s ‘death,’ and falls to his knees screaming at the sky, which is a huge change from the scene in the play, wherein Romeo is strangely calm, …show more content…
Again, when he later goes to the potion-seller in Mantua, he is begging him for the poison in the movie, whereas in the play he is calmly explaining to him why Romeo is the one truly selling the poison here, as he is giving him money, and money leads to much more death.
The scene that changed the most from play to movie was the scene in and outside of the Capulet tomb. Firstly, Romeo is being chased by the police the entire way. In the play, he and Balthazar sneak in at night and the watch only arrive at the end, once Romeo is already dead and Juliet is about to climb that long stepladder into the sky. Second, when Romeo tells Balthazar to go, he actually goes, and makes a run for it from the police. In the play, he stays and watches to see what will happen. Third, it’s in a church, rather than in a tomb in a graveyard, which leads into four, which is that there a priest there, which leads into five, which is that Romeo takes the priest hostage to keep the police back, which ties back again to one, which is that the police are there at all. The sixth difference is huge, which is that Paris not there, meaning he and Romeo never fight as they do in the book, meaning he is

I believe that the Zeffirelli version does a better job of presenting the original Shakespeare play. While lines were slightly changed, and certain scenes were deleted, or added, this version is a more classic, and traditional retelling of Romeo and Juliet. One reason why this version is better, is because of the production, and the ways in which the scenes were depicted. In the modern version, the scenes were exaggerated to an extent where they became too cheesy, and extreme. While it followed the plot more accurately, it was poorly made.…

The two versions of Romeo and Juliet 1.1 are different in the comedy aspect. The first and older version achieves the comic relief from various puns from the beginning of the play, such as “coals” to “colliers” and “choler” to “collars”. Also the use of rape jokes were meant to be humorus. In additon, the first version also jokes on the fact that Sampson is a wimp against other men, especially when biting his thumb. The second modern version added a comic relief from the fact that Gregory and Sampson, which are now Montagues, were acting like literal clowns at the beginning of the film.…

Although the love Romeo and Juliet share remains the same through both, the play and the movie, it changes slightly. The movie treated the romance between them as more immature and as a flight of fantasy. Unlike the play where they are treated more adult-like and their romance is more serious. There are many difference in the movie regarding the time period.…

Renaissance Theme with a Modern Touch During the filming of Romeo and Juliet there were many bumps in the road, including a staff member getting abducted, but then traded for a $300.00 ransom, and the crew being plagued with illness the worst was when Baz Luhrmann Luhrmann reached a fever of 110 degrees. Through all of that Baz Luhrmann still created a great film by utilizing line cuts, and a modern setting to make the connection between the characters and the audience more sincere and strong. Baz Luhrmann utilizes a very modern setting as opposed to the old original traditional Renaissance setting in Romeo and Juliet when they first meet. In Shakespear’s and Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, there are many similarities, but there are also many different substantial differences that can change the impression the viewer may get if they only watch the movie without reading the play. To begin, there are many similarities between Zeffirelli 's and Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. One similarity is that Romeo is very moody; in the beginning of the movie, Romeo can be seen frequently slumped over and talking in a very downcast manner. Similarly, in the play, Romeo is found by Benvolio laying moping around saying, “Should without eyes see pathways to his will!” (I.i.162).…

Romeo has a melodramatic reaction to the news. The friar gives a speech about how Romeo is acting like a woman and how he should be thankful for this merciful punishment. After his circumlocution, the friar informs Romeo that he will help out Romeo by setting him up to spend the night with Juliet before he sets off to Mantua. Once again, the friar is relying on the chance that the Capulets will not come into Juliet’s room during the night and the watchmen will not see the two of them. In addition, this may make it even harder for Romeo to leave Juliet the next day.…

Baz Lurhmann’s film Romeo + Juliet takes Shakespeare’s classic tragedy and drastically modernizes the tale. Although there have been numerous reenactments, on and off the stage, Lurhmann creates one of the most drastic versions seen. With this drastic take the fidelity of the film takes into account. Although the look of the film is not exactly what Shakespeare imagined the themes and characters are mostly true to the play. For instance, Act 3 Scene 1 (the death scene for Mercutio and Tybalt) has all the correct lines, but some actions are different.…
