Romeo & Juliet is a romantic tragedy including the themes of fate vs. freewill, marriage and obviously love. Fate vs. free will is a term describing if our lives are determined by what we choose to do or what is chosen for us. Romeo and Juliet are two lovers from completely different families with an ongoing feud. West Side Story is a modern version of Romeo & Juliet, and it shares similar traits. For example, in West Side Story, two people, Tony and Maria, from opposing gangs fall in love. Therefore, you can make the following analogy; Romeo is to Juliet as Tony is to Maria. SE. Hinton, the author of The Outsiders, incorporates brotherly love between Ponyboy and his gang. For example, during the rumble, the Greasers fought together and it wasn’t one man for himself. In the book, it explains that all of the Greasers love Johnny. SE. Hinton describes Johnny as a “lost puppy”, and you couldn’t not love him. Darry, Ponyboy and Sodapop have family relationships and they care for each other. Although The Outsiders doesn’t quite have the romantic love included in these two stories, it can still fall into this category along with Romeo & Juliet and West Side
