Leonardo DiCaprio once said “To believe in love, to be ready to give up anything for it, to be willing to risk your life for it, is the intimate tragedy”. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo falls in love with the enemy, Juliet leading the two individuals to go against their family values and principles of the rival. This is like the musical West Side Story by Arthur Laurents, Tony and Maria go against the ideals of their two separate rival gangs to be in love. They represent how the individual lovers are prevented and interfered with the rival families. In both stories, the protagonists from two rival groups go against their authority to be together and in love. They show how their circumstances get in the way of their romance …show more content…
During the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet states, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet” (II. ii. 37-39) This is an example of the Montague and Capulet feud where Juliet is willing to deny the feud and go against her family to be with Romeo as clarified when she stated how she will “No longer be a Capulet” at the end of her statement. This establishes the individual vs. group relationship in the novel. Although Juliet is a family member of the Capulets, she still goes against their will for love. This is very much like Maria and Tony who go against their gang members to be together. The couple realizes the consequences, like Romeo and Juliet did, but still continue with their actions of going against their authority. For example, during a scene in the musical, Tony comes across Maria's apartment building the moment that Maria is at the balcony of her room. Tony and Maria converse about their love and being together. Several times in the film, Tony would sneak into Maria's room through her window to see her because he could not walk through the entrance and risk of another member of the Sharks gang being there. The novel and musical both demonstrate the actions that the protagonists take as individuals in order to avoid the gang/families while still taking major

Although, as readers and viewers, we never find out what the original reason for this feud we can tell that both families hate each other with fierce passion, as shown by Tybalt’s ferocious desire to bring harm to Romeo whilst at the Capulet Ball. The feud prevents the two lovers from being able to freely spend time together without the risk of someone from either family finding out and telling Lord Capulet or Montague that their children were having a forbidden love affair. An obvious example of this during the play is the balcony scene. When Romeo climbs Capulet’s orchard walls and makes his way to Juliet’s balcony, Juliet is surprised to see him. She makes a point of telling Romeo that if he were to be caught, he would be captured and killed.…

Film Adaptations: Romeo and Juliet (1968) and West Side Story (1961) Many films have been created based on novels and play scripts. Plays have transitioned from performances on stage to the big cinema screens. Since many legendary play scripts were created before our century, American film directors had to ask themselves, “How can an older piece of work interest the audience of today?”. Directors found it challenging to express an original piece of work while attempting to interest the minds of today. The characters in many older works lived in a different time and in a different country.…

The movie grasped the basic understanding of Romeo and Juliet, and added musical numbers that went hand in hand with some of the scenes in Romeo and Juliet, which made the movie more entertaining and amusing to watch. The movie did an outstanding job of staying true to the original version of Romeo and Juliet, while adding more modern topics to the production, such as the problem with racism towards the Puerto Rican Sharks after moving to America, and the portrayal of modern city life, and a more modernized version of gangs. West Side Story included many versions of the scenes from Romeo and Juliet, such as the infamous balcony scene, and a fight between the two gangs that lead to the death of Riff (a portrayal of Mercutio), and Bernardo (a portrayal of Tybalt). Overall, the movie West Side Story is a successful and amusing version of Romeo and Juliet that everyone should…

Looking through a Postcolonialism lens, West Side Story establishes more physical ethnic groups than Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story takes place in New York City where there is danger that lurks around every corner and killers that lie in the shadows. Romeo and Juliet takes place in the Renaissance Era, in the cities of Verona and Mantua. Many stories reflect a work of Shakespeare’s in some way or another. One story that I remember comparing to Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, was “The Outsiders”. Both center around two groups that despise each other, in “Romeo and Juliet” it was the Montagues and the Capulets, and in “The Outsiders” those groups are the Socs and the Greasers. One theme in Shakespeare’s play is that hatred and fighting will bring tragedies. This is evident when Johnny dies in the book.…
