“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” -Audre Lorde. These words set a tone that applies to most of mankind, and shows how short sighted people can be. Also, not only does Audre Lorde’s quote apply to most of mankind, it is also perfect to address the points in Ray Bradbury’s short story, All Summer in a Day. This story takes place on the Venus, where Margot, a nine year old girl born on Earth is brutally moved to the raining planet and deprived of the sun at the age of 4. On Venus, it rains and rains nonstop for about 7 years at a time, with the sun coming out for only an hour every 7 years. The other children in Margot’s class …show more content…
The author uses the symbol of the forest to help the reader understand the emotions felt in this story. He does this by making it one of the constitutional settings where mixed emotions roam. The children at first feel happy, but then realize what they’ve done to Margot and instantly regret it. One of the first scenes where this is happening is: “They walked slowly down the hall in the sound of cold rain. They turned through the doorway to the room in the sound of the storm and thunder, lightning on their faces, blue and terrible. They walked over to the closet door slowly and stood by it. They unlocked the door, even more slowly, and let Margot out.” (4). This scene particularly supports the message of guilt and happiness all at the same time in the short story All Summer in a Day because it shows the guilt part of guilt and happiness. The children had just realized the terrible deed they had just done. They locked Margot in the closet, making her miss the sun that won’t come back out for another 7 years, and they locked her in the closet just because they disagreed on what she thought the sun was like (and her depressed demeanor). However, Margot was correct. Once they realized this, they felt extremely guilty for the way they thought and acted. Also, the symbol of the forest was present because it was where they were running …show more content…
For example, if somebody doesn’t have something that is trending or popular, they may be frowned upon for it by others for being “an outsider”. Going against the majority can be very difficult, as shown in All Summer in a Day; Going against the other children leaves Margot alone, depressed, and missing the sun and her old life. Another thing that is proved difficult to reach through this short story is happiness. Margot represents all of mankind as she hopes and struggles for happiness. However, it is much easier to get in contact with guilt. The children reach guilt in the story when they locked Margot up in a closet, thinking her opinion was wrong; and made her miss the thing most important to her in the whole entire world. And on top of it, she was right. So, don’t judge people for being different and don’t deny things so quickly just because they’re unusual. Just put yourself in Margot’s shoes- imagine you were moved away from Earth at age four without choice to the raining planet Venus where the sun comes out only every 7 years or so. That’s already bad enough. Now you’re depressed because you miss Earth, your home, and especially the sun... and you’re also extremely sick of constant rain. Now, you have to deal with kids who think they know what they’re talking about even though they were only two years old when they saw the sun. The constant
