“The Rain, the Closet, and the Sun”
“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” -Audre Lorde. These words set a tone that applies to most of mankind, and shows how short sighted people can be. Also, not only does Audre Lorde’s quote apply to most of mankind, it is also perfect to address the points in Ray Bradbury’s short story, All Summer in a Day. This story takes place on the Venus, where Margot, a nine year old girl born on Earth is brutally moved to the raining planet and deprived of the sun at the age of 4. On Venus, it rains and rains nonstop for about 7 years at a time, with the sun coming out for only an hour every 7 years. The other children in Margot’s class

The author uses the symbol of the forest to help the reader understand the emotions felt in this story. He does this by making it one of the constitutional settings where mixed emotions roam. The children at first feel happy, but then realize what they’ve done to Margot and instantly regret it. One of the first scenes where this is happening is: “They walked slowly down the hall in the sound of cold rain. They turned through the doorway to the room in the sound of the storm and thunder, lightning on their faces, blue and terrible. They walked over to the closet door slowly and stood by it. They unlocked the door, even more slowly, and let Margot out.” (4). This scene particularly supports the message of guilt and happiness all at the same time in the short story All Summer in a Day because it shows the guilt part of guilt and happiness. The children had just realized the terrible deed they had just done. They locked Margot in the closet, making her miss the sun that won’t come back out for another 7 years, and they locked her in the closet just because they disagreed on what she thought the sun was like (and her depressed demeanor). However, Margot was correct. Once they realized this, they felt extremely guilty for the way they thought and acted. Also, the symbol of the forest was present because it was where they were running …show more content…
For example, if somebody doesn’t have something that is trending or popular, they may be frowned upon for it by others for being “an outsider”. Going against the majority can be very difficult, as shown in All Summer in a Day; Going against the other children leaves Margot alone, depressed, and missing the sun and her old life. Another thing that is proved difficult to reach through this short story is happiness. Margot represents all of mankind as she hopes and struggles for happiness. However, it is much easier to get in contact with guilt. The children reach guilt in the story when they locked Margot up in a closet, thinking her opinion was wrong; and made her miss the thing most important to her in the whole entire world. And on top of it, she was right. So, don’t judge people for being different and don’t deny things so quickly just because they’re unusual. Just put yourself in Margot’s shoes- imagine you were moved away from Earth at age four without choice to the raining planet Venus where the sun comes out only every 7 years or so. That’s already bad enough. Now you’re depressed because you miss Earth, your home, and especially the sun... and you’re also extremely sick of constant rain. Now, you have to deal with kids who think they know what they’re talking about even though they were only two years old when they saw the sun. The constant

The kids were very excited to know that the sun would be coming soon since the rain had finally stopped. Margot did not seem too stoked about it since she had seen it plenty times before.…

“We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” (Barbara Jordan) The world would be a dull place if everyone were the same. Would it not be great to be able to prevent conflict altogether? Not having to resolve any disputes, or differences, and having complete harmony. It would be amazing; however, conflict is part of life. We may not be able to prevent it all the time, but we can be prepared to resolve it in the best manner possible. Authors, Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson, share their knowledge in their book titled, Resolving everyday conflict, providing a Christian view on conflict resolution (Sande & Johnson, 2011).…

“It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences,” said Audre Lorde, a Caribbean-American writer, and civil rights activist. In this quote she is saying that if we just agreed that we are different, and we won’t alway get along, then the world would be a more peaceful place. Even in today’s society people are pulled apart from others because of their differences. Even so the society today is better than it was during times like America in the 1930’s, on the Indian reservations, and in Europe between Jews and Christians.…

In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic The Scarlet Letter, there are lots of symbols with multiple meanings. One such object with multiple meanings is the forest. The forest has multiple meanings because it represents evil and danger to some, but to others it is freedom and a happy place. The multiple meanings of the forest shows how Hawthorne feels about many of his characters and even the world around them. Hawthorne feels that people and the world, much like the forest, has many sides and can be seen differently by different people.…

The year is 2026; the world has blown itself to hell. The advantages of our modern society mattered little; when man, in his brash irrational thinking, went and pulled the trigger on the final act as a species. In Ray Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains” the reader envisions the end of the world witnessed through the eyes of the last member of the family; furthermore, in that moment it is hard to remember that the witness was indeed not human. Man has long instilled humanistic characteristics onto inanimate objects: the car that takes on a (usually) female gender’s name, a hunting rifle that has shot true for the hunter. It is man’s nature to ascribe these tendencies to objects; indeed, the possibilities are limitless with the advent…

Blotches of paint filled an empty canvas on Wednesday afternoon in honor of Latin Heritage Month, with each stroke illustrating how the Ramapo College community defines what it means to be LatinX in America. “No one has to speak on what they think this is. It’s a drawing and everyone can perceive it in their own way,” said Niocelys Guzman, junior nursing major and president of Chi Upsilon Sigma. Committed to educating, elevating, and empowering Latinas, Chi Upsilon Sigma’s Ramapo chapter was founded in 2014 and continues to uphold the values of its founders. Representing all genders and identities at its renamed LatinXpression event, the sorority encouraged students, faculty and staff to push past prevalent stereotypes and contemplate…

These symbols help to convey the author’s meaning that not everything is pure and that life has its hidden evils. The forest seems to take up a majority of the setting that Goodman Brown experiences along the course of the story. It is a place that he fears yet must travel while on his journey. As soon as he enters the forest, he states that, “There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree.”…

It was inevitable that the sound of laughter from children his own age, the buoyant jokes they 'd utter and the encouraging words they’d say to one another would cause numerous questions to run through his mind, "How does it feel to be like them? To not be ashamed of who they are and where they’d come from? " It’d leave him wondering how it would feel to be accepted. It’s tough to imagine children experiencing something as horrid as discrimination, it’s even harder to believe they’re also the ones causing it. How they see the universe and everybody in it is influenced by those around them.…

“Different does not mean deficient”, these wise words were said by Reverend Dr.Jeremiah Wright in his interview. The foundation for the injustices done to black people that have taken place in America transpired due to hate; and this hate stems from one major factor: being different. In their interviews, Dr.Wright and James Cone mentioned and elaborated on a lot of topics that, in my opinion, need to be discussed more often instead of what Kim Kardashian is doing in her life. Too often we find ourselves losing our consciousness to “Weapons of Mass Distraction” as Dr. J.V. Pimienta-Bey would so eloquently put it. “Unashamedly black and unapologetically Christan”(Dr.…

Finally stopping to think about the consequences for your actions is a vital theme in All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury. In this short story there are many times when you can see this theme portrayed throughout.
