First of all, the two stories similarly relate because both had a journey through space in one point of the story. The only differences had to be the purposes of journeying through space. In the “zoo,” the journey through space had been more leisure time for the horse-spiders who were vacationing (Hoch, 87) while in the “Ruum,” the journey through space purpose had been to save the Earth from a dangerous probe (Porges, 89), so it had been more like an expedition.
Another similarity between the two stories would be the technology used. They were both futuristic but their …show more content…
Professor Hugo in the “zoo” (Hoch, 85) and Jim Irwin in the “ruum” (Porges, 92). Jim Irwin played a part as the protagonist in the “Ruum” (Porges, 90) and so did Professor Hugo in the “zoo”.(Hoch, 85)
The two themes of the story were also similar as well, both gave the message, don't underestimate the intelligence or power of something. For example, in the “zoo” the Chicago people had no clue that the horse-spiders had the ability to communicate with each other. They saw them as clueless animals with no intelligence but the end of the story reveals that they can do everything a human can (Hoch, 87). In the ruum an example of this theme would be when Jim underestimated the Ruum. He thought something of such size could not do harm but he underestimated it's power.
To conclude, the “zoo” and the “ruum” were similar stories but also slightly different due to various reasons including the journey through space, the technology, the alien characters, the human characters and the themes. Both stories were good science fiction reads and I enjoyed reading both
