Homer's Odyssey: Song Analysis

When I compared Joe’s Odyssey songs to Homer’s Odyssey books, there seems to be a 1:1 correspondence between most of the songs and the books. When I took a look at each song individually and compared it to the corresponding books, Joe emphasized certains aspects of each book and turned them into lyrics. The lyrics emphasize the certain aspects about the book to tell the poem as a whole. He tries to highlight certain aspects from all 24 books to turn the Odyssey into his own version of the poem. Joe’s song V. Free is similar to Homer’s book 5 because book 5 was all about when Kalypso was instructed by Hermes to let Odysseus go, under the orders of Zeus. Goodkin’s performance is similar to a performance of an ancient Greek bard is he choose to emphasize certain parts of the story. Bards are known for telling their own versions of the story and picking and choosing what they want to emphasize on, which is exactly what Mr. Goodkin was doing during his performance. We also were familiar with the story of the Odyssey before Mr. Goodkin performed his own version of it. One difference is that his recited performance came in a written version as well. During Mr. Goodkin’s performance, he presented a written version of the poem to us while ancient Greek bards just recite it and make up the lines along the way. Mr. Goodkin had his lines memorized and would present the same version of the poem every time he performed in front of people. Another similarity between the ancient Greek bards and Mr. Goodkin is that they both recited the poem with a stringed instrument. Although it wasn’t a lyre that the Greek bards used it was a guitar which is a string instrument. Mr.Goodkin’s performance also emphasized the better times similar to how the ancient Greek bards did.
