Comparing Piaget And Kohlberg's Theory Of Moral Development

Morality is defined as “principles for how individuals ought to treat one another, with respect to justice, others’ welfare, and rights” (Turiel, 1983). Morality is how we see things as right and wrong. Two main theorist that spoke about moral development are Piaget and Kohlberg. Piaget argued that the skill to use reasoning about intensions to make judgements about the moral dimensions of behavior seems to occur along with concrete operational reasoning (Flavell, 1976). Similarly, Kohlberg expands on Piagets theory and argues that the development of an individual proceeds from a selfish desire to avoid punishment (Kohlberg, 1963). Another theorist that talks about moral development is Freud. Freud believes moral development progresses when the individual’s selfish wishes are suppressed and substituted by the values of important socializing agents their life’s (Freud, 1962). …show more content…
According to Piaget moral realism is the stage when children believe rules of games can’t be changed because they come from important authorities, they also believe that all rule violations lead to punishment (Piaget, 1965, p.60). After the age of 8 Piaget states that children move onto the moral relativism stage, in which they start to believe that people can agree to change rules if they want
