Comparing Othello 'And Movie O'

Improved Essays
Though the movie “O” is meant to resemble the play Othello, there are also many differences. “O” is a modern day Othello. Personally, the play was not as interesting and easy to keep up with as the movie. I enjoyed the movie much more because it was modernized and seemed like something that would happen in this day and age.; like the fact that Odin turns to drugs to cope. The language was also more hip, which made it easier to comprehend what was going on. I give it four stars. One major difference was the setting. While the play was military related in Venice, the movie took place in a high school. Rather than a war going on, the students were worried about the basketball season. Iago/Hugo is envious of Cassio for taking the lieutenant position …show more content…
The belief of betrayal throws O off his game and turns him insane. The common theme of betrayal and manipulation is shared. Othello has seizures and spazzes out like Odin does. Both express their anger through violence. The scarf/handkerchief has the same meaning in both stories. It means a lot to O and was a gift from him to Des. In both stories, Hugo/Iago desperately want it to use to his advantage. He has Emily/Emilia give it to him. In the play, she comes across it when Des drops it. Emily finds it in the dorm and takes it in the movie. Hugo gives it to Mike to give to Emily, and Iago plants the handkerchief in Cassio’s room. When he tells O about this, this is the straw that broke the camel’s back for him. Unfortunately, O lets the drama get the best of him. He’s in pain and very confused, and doesn't know how to handle his anger. He eventually winds u killing Des, despite the fact that she’s 100% innocent. In the play, he suffocates her with a pillow; and in the movie he strangled her with his bear hands. As expected, he commits suicide afterward. A tragic end to a real love gone sour because of envy. It sucks that he didn’t find out

The idea of race is definitely well known in this film, considering "O" incorporates the use of slang such as the n-word to create a more realistic take on the environment that Othello took place in. Problems that sprung up is that Oden had to face more problems that had to deal with the expectations others had for him rather than his own values. Odin must prove himself to others because he is a transfer student from a different high school and playing basketball on a team full of white people which makes a modern cliché of racism. However, this is nowhere near the type of racism experienced in Shakespeare’s version. On the other hand, Nelson portrays the themes of envy and trust, where Odin views Mike's body in the mirror rather than his own, allowing this imagery to reveal that Odin has a definitive jealous idea and wishes to be someone else.…

The movie O has many differences while also having many similarities to the play. The main similarity is that everything happens because of Iago and Hugo's plot against Othello and Oden. Another difference is that O is portrayed in the modern day but still stays true to the way the original play was written, while also the story has been altered it still holds true to the plot line. Racial tension can be noticed in both the play and the movie. Othello is a black man who is in the army and is known for his bravery and skill in war, and Odin is the star of his high school team he is also the only black kid at the school.…

The similarities between “Ten Things I Hate About You” and The Taming of a Shrew are quite profound. It was not difficult to see which character represented which, and you could definitely see the plot of the play as it played out through the much modernized movie. However, there were many differences that must be pointed out. Let us begin with the most obvious difference… the time. While it was very interesting to see the play, set in the middle ages of Italy, transferred to a modern U.S. city, many plot points had to be removed simply because they did not fit with the times.…

There are many parallel characters and archetypes that are introduced in both of the stories. A particularly uncanny similarity between the two stories is the main villains: Iago and Don John. From Othello and Much Ado respectively, both characters aim to stir trouble in a seemingly happy situation. In both cases, there are two innocent individuals who love each other and the villain tries to manipulate the husband or soon to be husband and exploit their foolishness. In Othello, Iago manages to trick Othello in believing that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful and unloyal; Iago convinces Othello that she had an affair with his subordinate Cassio.…

    (Shakespeare 161).
