Ancient Greeks used the term hubris to describe overconfidence of the protagonist. Sophocles shows how pride can make a person blind and stop them looking at the truth which is shown through Oedipus in Oedipus the King. However, Oedipus was running from the prophecy so it won’t come true. But fate came to him while he was searching for the murderer as Tiresias accuses Oedipus of killing Laius. Oedipus refuses to accept the truth and thought that everyone else except him is telling a lie. “ You have no power or truth. You are blind, your ears and mind as well as eyes”(pg.23). This quote explains that although Teiresias is blind physically, but can see the truth, whereas, Oedipus who can see the natural light but cannot see the reality of his situation. Whereas, in the movie No Country for Old Men, Llewelyn Moss luckily finds out that the drug deal went wrong and then he finds out the briefcase full of money in a dark, gloomy dessert. Darkness is used as a symbol that shows the problems Moss would confront in the future. Later, when Moss tries to shoot antelope shows that he has some flaws although he had tough training when he was in the army.
