Comparing Odyssey, Gilgamesh, And The Shadow Of The Wind

Each person has a particular personal journey to find something that will fulfil their lives. Out of all of the readings that I could’ve chosen, I chose three readings, which are the Odyssey, Gilgamesh, and The Shadow of The Wind. In all of the stories, I’ve concluded that each of the main characters take a dangerous journey to their final destination. In the odyssey, Odysseus finds his home. In Gilgamesh story, Gilgamesh tries to find immortality. In The Shadow of The Wind, Daniel tries to find the rest of the Carax books.

In the Odyssey, it was mainly about how Odysseus goes on a trip with his crew towards home from the Trojan War. Odysseus faces dangerous mythological creatures, and supernatural Gods. For example, Odysseus faces a cyclops named Polyphemus. In search for food, Odysseus and his crew finds Polyphemus’ cave full of sheep, cheese, and milk, but they are soon trapped by Polyphemus. He discovers a book called The Shadow of The Wind by Julián Carax, and he falls in love with it. He is confused when he discovers that the rest of Julián Carax’s books have been burned, but then discovers that there may be still more of his books out there. (Carlos: 1-2) Daniel finds a letter addressed Julián Carax from Penelope, and visits her house, only to find her family's caretaker and the abandoned house. From there, Daniel finds a woman named Nuria Monfort, that’s connected to Julián Carax and she gives false information to Daniel about him. Daniel finds out, confronts her, and later Nuria is murdered. After her death, daniel finds out the truth from the letters of how she met Julián Carax and the rest of the story. In this novel, Daniel’s particular personal journey was to find the rest of Julián Carax’s books, in which he did, and in the end he didn’t find his books, but Julián Carax himself.
