Hope can often be defined as a wantful expectation or a wish tending to be positive. Hope can as simple as a child desiring a treat, a fan hoping their sports team will win a game, or on a more serious note an end to war in the world. In The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus becomes more and more hopeful as his journey progresses to Ithaca, his home. Striving ambitions and expectations are also commonly found in Touching Spirit Bear written by Ben Mikealson. A story where Cole Mathews is changed by the hard-ships he experiences while banished on an island as a result of his juvenile crimes.

During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…

Today I read chapters two, three, and half of four which was about an hour and forty-five minutes of reading. In these chapters, there was a meeting called for the citizens where Telemachus, Odysseus’s son, explains his problem to the men about the suitors taking advantage of their home; although, Antinous disagrees with Telemachus and claims it is Penelope’s fault for not choosing a husband. The suitors also find evidence that Penelope has been lying to them about promising to marry one of the suitors when she finishes weaving shroud, but they found her unraveling the shroud every night. Telemachus and Athena arrive at Pylos to be welcomed to a sacrifice to Poseidon. With the help of Athena, who is still disguised as Mentor, Telemachus makes…

The famous epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, tells of Odysseus’ tumultuous journey back to his home on the island of Ithaka. Odysseus, the main character in the epic poem, appears to be the hero slaying the monsters, but as his journey continues it becomes more difficult to distinguish who the monster really is. Upon closer inspection, the true monster is not one of the various mythical creates Odysseus faces, but is instead Odysseus himself. Passages from book nine and book 22 of The Odyssey, demonstrate how the true monster is actually Odysseus. Odysseus and his men arrive on an island, in book nine, and enter a cave seeking to steal any valuable loot they can find.…
