Comparing Oceanic Crust And Erath

Decent Essays
Oceanic crust makes up about 0.1 percent of the Erath but its life cycle assists in separating the material of the upper mantle into a heavy remains and a lighter set of basaltic rocks. It also removes the incompatible elements, that don't fit into mantle minerals and move into the liquid melt. These then move into the continental crust as plate tectonics proceeds. In the meantime, the oceanic crust reacts with seawater and brings some of it down into the mantle.
Continental crust is about 50 km thick, about 2 billion years old, and it covers about 40 percent of the planet. While almost all of the oceanic crust is underwater, most of the continental crust is exposed to the air.
The continental crust is consists of granitic rocks, which have

Subsequent research helped validate the theory of plate techtonics and the Aleutian Subduction Zone. Over 600 years of landform uplift finally gave way. The initial shaking caused liquefaction from the Spring melt and the proximity of the ocean saturating the soil and making it extremely unstable. When the spring-loaded trigger gave way it thrust the landmass towards the ocean for a period of 4.5 minutes during which most damage occurred. There was a vertical displacement of an area about 200,000 square miles.…

Besides the granite of which there is a plethora of, diorite and monzonite also formed as a result of the cooling of molten rock under the earth’s surface. These rock formations were the result of the natural geological process of subduction in which the Pacific Ocean plate is forced underneath the advancing North American Continental plate. Critically hot water from the subduction of the ocean floor, rose upwards about 75-100 kilometers and melted rocks in its path, creating the volcanic activity that gave rise to rock formations away from the subduction zone. The time at which all these process are dated to have taken place is during the Cretaceous…

One of the most important assumption is the idea that the Brim River, which separates Palean from Lithos, was a huge barrier to take woven baskets to other places. It is not clear whether this observation is based on either how the river is in these day or how the river used to be. One might wonder if the river was less deep and dangerous in the past due to in other ages the whether could benefit the native to cross the river without using boats. Extreme cold or highest degrees of hot weather could allow Palean people to go over the river. In the former case, walking over the ice and in the latter case, the river could even not exist.…

The U.S. Geological Survey’s article, “Plate Tectonics in a Nutshell,” describes how convection currents can cause hot magma to reach the surface along divergent plate boundaries. Iceland, in fact, is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is exactly that type of divergent plate boundary. This is the beginning of the rock cycle where brand new rocks on the Earth’s surface form to replace other rocks that are lost because of the subduction of sinking plates at convergent boundaries, as also described in the “Nutshell” article. What is unique about the process as it appears in McPhee’s story is the speed and violence with which the changes happen. McPhee describes how the fishing island of Heimaey had to be evacuated with little warning due to a gigantic volcanic eruption in 1973.…

In this week’s reading from chapter 5 ocean sediments, I learned a lot about sediments and different types that I never knew existed. The ocean the floor and particles moving around the ocean are actually called sediments. The sediments accumulate at a rate of centimeters in a year. Sediments are caused by various things happening inside of the ocean such as volcanic eruptions, rocks eroding, chemical reactions in the water and evidence of space matter.…

Also, tectonic plates moved through the solid earth in a cycle between the crust and the mantle over very long periods of time. Plate tectonics form the Earth’s crust and are floating above the mantle. The boundaries of the plate tectonics either form mountains or volcanoes from magma beneath the surface, or are subducted and recycled back into the mantle as it moves through the solid earth. Eldfell was formed when magma came up through a long fissure on the island from the mantle, which was part of the repetitive cycle of magma moving through the crust and the…

The topic of this discussion is to explain why Africa and South America are moving apart. The drifting apart of Africa and South America has to do with the theory known as the theory of plate tectonics. Based on this model, the crust the coolest part of the mantle, make up Earth’s strong outer layer, known as the lithosphere. Right beneath the lithosphere is the asthenosphere, the hottest part of the mantle. Rocks at this depth are very near the melting temperature, and respond to forces by flowing similarly to the way a thick liquid would.…

There is an area within the Pacific Ocean called the “Ring of Fire,” that is a region of high volcanic and seismic activity ranging from parts of Asia, to Australia, and to North and South America. Majority of active volcanoes on Earth are located within the Ring of Fire. In fact 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes are located in the Ring of Fire. Within it’s boundary in the Pacific Ocean, the Ring of Fire consist of the Pacific Plate, where it runs along against other plates such as the North American Plate, the Nazca Plate, the Eurasian Plate, the Philippines Plate, the Indo-Australia Plate and other plates. This is known as sebduction and the volcanically and seismically active area nearby is known as a subduction zone.…

The Cambrian Period was an era filled with a massive explosion of a variety of animals and ecosystems. It was a time where super continent Pannotia no longer existed. During this time period, North America remained above water and was eroded by running water. North American was also on the equator which meant warm climate. The continents were oriented very differently, the east coast of North America faced the south.…

To begin with, 65 million years ago was the start of the Paleocene epoch that was the establishment of the tertiary period on earth. Due to the extinction of the dinosaurs during the previous period, there was a heap amount of mammals accumulating and evolving from their original size and aspects. Many forms of animals existed big, small, and of many different sizes; rapidly increasing in numbers by reproduction. In this epoch, carnivores were very large in numbers. For example, a bird that was one of the top predators during this time was the Phorusrhacids known as flightless birds or terror birds.…

Alfred Wegener claimed that all countries and continents were once connected and he named it Pangaea. I know that Ancient Climate is one of the main reasons because Climate has a stroll on everything meaning it affects life weather and living situations and many plant life have been found in different continents. Another example of strong evidence for Continental Drift is Mountain ranges because many seem like they have been cut off at some point. After examining the evidence of glacial scratches on different continents was found that they matched like a puzzle. The evidence I used to support ancient climate, mountain ranges, fossils, and rock type highly prove the hypothesis of continental drift.…

    The Precambrian Time

Precambrian time covers the tremendous greater part of the Earth's history, beginning with the planet's creation around 4.5 billion years prior and finishing with the development of complex, multi celled life-shapes very nearly four billion years after the fact. The Precambrian is the most punctual of the geologic ages, which are set apart by various layers of sedimentary rock. Set down over a huge number of years, these stone layers contain a lasting record of the Earth's past, including the fossilized stays of plants and creatures covered when the silt were shaped. The Earth was at that point more than 600 million years of age when life started. The planet had cooled off from its unique liquid state, adding to a strong hull and seas made…
