Both Anton Chekhov and Joyce Carol Oates write their stories about a man who, although already married, is still on the lookout for a true lover. Both these authors use a pet dog to connect the lady with this man. However, although these stories are quite similar, they are not the same. In fact, if one looks at the creativity and artistry behind the creation, one would see a vast difference between the two. The real analysis comes when we look at their writing techniques. Within the story, Anton Chekhov succeeds in certain decisions in his adaptation, such as placing the readers in suspense, while Oates does the better job in other aspects of her own version, such as ........
In the “Lady with the Little Dog”, Chekhov makes the character's thoughts come true to life. For example, when Gurov goes to the theater, he thinks to himself "It's very likely that she goes to opening nights," he thought" (Chekhov 240). Another time, following his first meeting with Anna, he thinks about her and assumes that "she would probably meet him again" (Chekhov 234). While she is having relations with both her husband and her lover, she is always shutting her eyes. It probably does not matter to her who is on the other side, as long as it is someone who genuinely loves her. When Anna first meets the man, she is not too talkative. However, "Later, incredibly, she heard herself asking: Do you.....do you love me?" "You're so beautiful!" he said, amazed. She felt this beauty, shy and glowing and centered in her eyes” (Oates......"). This is really what she has been looking for the entire time: someone to genuinely love
