In Sumer, war occurred for thousands of years. Due to the fact that the city states were competing for resources, it is understandable that conflict would arise. But in Sumer, war was so prevalent, that it became a centerpiece of art and literature. Many military developments were made in Sumer due to this constant war, such as the creation of the helmet, and war also gave way to rise of lugals(warrior kings). Norte Chico, on the other hand, was quite peaceful. There was no evidence of war at all, which may be attributed to the cover of the surrounding mountains. Also, Norte Chico is not in the proximity of any formally established civilizations. As for job specialization, Norte Chico did not have any. Instead, they had a system called the Cargo System, which meant that was someone completed a job, they were tasked with another one and someone else took over the previous job. This switching does not allow for job specialization because multiple jobs are being assigned to one person. It does allow for large projects, such as making a giant mound, to be carried out without the creation of a social hierarchy. In Sumer, the hierarchy was class based. The king was at the top and the slaves were at the bottom. There was a separate class, for scribes, people who spent their whole youths learning how to fish. These differences in status are important because modern day civilizations are based off of these civilizations so the modern ones can see what went

The film I watched this week is El Norte. It is a film that surrounds the brother and sister, Rosa and Enrique Xuncax, who fled from Guatemala to Mexico and finally, Los Angeles because their father, Arturo Xuncax, tried to form a labor union in Guatemala and ended up getting executed and the two are being hunted by the soldiers. In the film, it clearly states that there are a lot of differences between Guatemalan and Mexicans that lives close to the border between Mexico and US. It shows how tightly bonded the two siblings are, while witnessing the Mexicans taking advantage of each other (List). This juxtaposition shows how the Mexican culture is twisted because of the immigration issue, of the “American Dream” attracting them to go across…

Justifying Rulership: a comparison of the Olmec and Ubaid cultures There are many similarities in the rise of complex society in both Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica. From monumental structure building to well integrated trade, cultures such as the Olmec of Mesoamerica 1200 BC - 400 AD and the Ubaid of Mesopotamia 4500 BC-3000 BC, have many parallel elements relating to their success as complex societies and what one may refer to as states, despite thousands of years between the two. Comparatively, there are also key differences between the two, particularly the timescale in which complexity took place and the practices of agriculture.
