Gothic literature uses many horrific elements like murder, suspense, and paranoia. In And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, people begin to die one by one. Every time a character dies, the remaining characters become more frightened. In contrast, in Rudyard Kipling’s ¨My Own True Ghost Story¨ the main character is thrilled by death and thinks that it is interesting. Even though these stories are completely different, both explore the different perspectives of death. In And Then There Were None, death is terrifying and threatens the characters, whereas in ¨My Own True Ghost Story¨ death and the thought of ghosts fascinates the main character. These stories demonstrate that such feelings are natural and do not need to dominate the person’s thinking. “Lives of the Dead” has a considerable application beyond the confines of the storyteller and those people close to him. This story essentially is the climax of all the others in terms of the lessons it conveys. Imagination is the ultimate way for O’Brien to deal with death, and it encourages us to think of ways to deal with death that may seem odd to other people, but that work for us.…

One of the ways that “The Red Room,” creates suspense is from its setting of a dark mysterious castle containing a supposedly haunted “red room”. As the narrator explores the castle and the red room, the gothic setting becomes a bigger part of the story and the narrator becomes overwhelmed with fear. In comparison, And Then There Were None also uses a gothic setting to create suspense and tension. The setting of the big mansion on an island cut off from the rest of the world allows some of the characters to let fear and anxiety seep into their minds and put them on a path of paranoia, as they realize there is no escape.…

Of Mice and Men and Code Name Verity are both novels that highlight the struggles of two polarizing characters throughout troublesome points in history. The authors both carry the plot in similar manner while presenting two characters that have to do what is right to save their friend from further persecution. In both stories, tragedy is foreshadowed whether it be from previous sinister events or the tone of the novel transitioning to a more somber one. However, these two stories are not exactly duplicates. With the differing time periods and social issues, it is clear there is some contrast between the two pieces of fiction alongside the similarities.…

The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World, and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings are two short stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez that are both very similar, yet very different. Marquez was a popular author of short stories from the 1950s to 1970s, he had a very noticeable aesthetic where he created very unusual, and unrealistic situations, but somehow shows human faults. This makes it to where if readers truly read the book, and realize what Marquez is trying to do, they can look at their own similarities to the characters in the story. These type of stories would be classified as fables, conveying a moral with unrealistic situations, but Marquez has a very unique style that separates him from the average Aesop’s Fable. Which brings us to the two short stories we'll be talking about today, which are two prime examples of Marquez special ability to create such a different style of fables.…

Joyce Carol Oates author of “Where are You Going, Where Have you Been?” and Edgar Allan Poe author of “The Tell-Tale Heart” use the gothic elements of extreme threats and uncanniness throughout their short stories. When people are in situations where there is an extreme threat, they sometimes act irrationally and normal everyday things might even seem uncanny to them, making them lose their sense of sanity. The gothic elements of extreme threat and uncanniness are very important in these two stories because they evoke the reader 's emotions, to the point that they are feeling the way the characters are feeling.
