“The Awakening” VS “The Open Boat”
The story “The Open Boat.” is that of an exemplary naturalism because of its skeptical representation of life, the characters are left with the presumption to the will of external forces, and nature which is not an entity but rather an indifferent force. Stephen Crane’s story seems to have a theme of hopelessness that runs through it which contributes to its cynical and morbid view of life. From the beginning to the end of the story, the tone and perception of the writing is one that is somber as well as the characters never seem to be free of peril. The author Crane uses irony to establish his naturalistic view of natures disconnected relationship with humanity, the correspondents tries to find the meaning of life or the fearness of faith by expecting that there must be a reason for the four men’s lives being spared in the sinking of the ship but there does not appear to be any meaning. The correspondents repeated quote “If I’m going to be drowned, If I’m going to be drowned, If I’m going to be drowned, why in the name of the seven mad god’s, who ruled the sea was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees” suggests that the traditional pagan gods that mythology says that used to be intimately involved in human lives have abandoned these men and could care less about their survival or …show more content…
Both of these story are different in many aspects one being that they both have complete different meanings and the other that the styles of writing is completely different. Nevertheless in Chopin’s story the awakening she tells the story in a personal perspective. Although realism is a movement that began around the mid nineteenth century and found its way up to late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Realism as the name implies is depicting the life as we know and that is exactly what Chopin is doing when reading “The Awakening. As far as Crane’s “The Open Boat” story goes he is telling the story in a different type of style he tells the story in a scientific manner. Now, although Crane’s story is naturalism, it is believed that these stories were around from 1880 to 1930s. Nevertheless not to be mistake but naturalism is a form of realism and this basically means that it will also show life as it is in its creations. However, naturalism is more focused on explaining things in a more scientific way and that is what Crane’s “The Open Boat”
