When most people hear “Irish-Catholic family” the first thing that comes to their mind is big. That’s exactly what my family is a big, tight-knit family. Growing up I’ve had plenty of role models, some not as great as others but still, they each taught me something. The two people that inspire me the most are my Pop-pop and my younger cousin Skyler. My Pop-pop survived a brain aneurysm and Skyler overcomes Cerebral Palsy everyday. The biggest thing Skyler and my Pop-Pop have taught me is how to keep going even when things get hard. They’ve been through hell and back with a smile on their face, and I try to do the same. I’ve come to accept and appreciate all of the changes in my life such as, my parent’s separation and divorce, my fight with my seizures, and the deaths of family members. Over my years in high school I’ve come to learn that you can’t control everything, no matter how hard you try but, you can choose to see the bright side of every situation.
Skyler, although she’s only nine years old has already taught me more than I’d ever imagine. She is the strongest, happiest social butterfly anyone will ever meet. Skyler was born eleven weeks premature

Something Skyler and my Pop-Pop have in common is the people who helped build them up to be as strong as they are. Both of them, attended countless physical therapy sessions, some of which I went to. At their sessions I saw first hand how physical therapy helps people have control over their bodies. Without physical therapy, neither of them would be able to bend down and tie their shoes. After seeing what physical therapists can do for the people I love the most inspired me to do the same for other people. Nothing makes me happier than the idea of working with someone so that they have the ability to do simple, everyday things that most people take for

Life is full of people that help shape and mold you into the person you become. Maybe it's a parent, grandparent, teacher, or maybe even a friend. For me at least, it's my older sister, Amber Oertel. Amber has been with me as long as I can remember, granted she would have rather had mom and dad bring home a puppy instead of me, I still like to think she still likes me. She has been with me through some of the greatest losses in both of our lives, she has also been the source of some of my greatest adventures, but most of all, she has been an important role model in my life.…

"half of life is showing up", my father always said that to me, when I was growing up it took me eight years but I finally understand what he had been trying to teach me, and that lesson changed me. After spending a month at Marist College, I have come to the conclusion that my father, Sean Coughlin has made a significant impact on both my life and helped make me the independent man that I am today. I was raised in a loving Christian family that has contributed to my personal values of acceptance, caring, and understanding. My parents continue to be great role models in my life and show me what it means to be a servant leader to the community. My father has been a high school football coach my whole life. As a child in south Florida, I watched my father extend his hand to many young Haitian refugees fleeing an oppressive government. Some of the Haitian boys joined the football team and became a part of a family that was missing as a result of their travels and situation.…

Linked by Blood Sala, sala, sala, my silver anklets chime as I swish and twirl in the mirror, admiring the skirt of my dabang. I was looking forward to showing the dark blue, flowing dress off at my grandparents’ annual family Ramadan feast. The dress glides as I saunter to the balcony of my room. The pale pink sky was slowly transitioning into a light blue as the sun rose farther into the sky, like an unsatisfied painter painting over his strokes. I breathe in the sweet smell of ripe bananas and flowering roses wafting from our large garden below.…

Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…

Having been the first born to an Irish catholic family between the periods of 1880-1935 was a journey to begin with. I grew up with famine and death at every corner. The feeling that the community were as thick as thieves and the thought of people stealing and killing each other over anything materialistic was unimaginable. A child that grew up with this much struggle, I could not recall a time in my life that I felt less safe or well off. However, I am certain that I was sheltered from a lot of other things that could have happened to me, mainly because I used to be in my house a lot with my big brother; whenever he did not go to school or help the family out with laborious chores that he had to do daily.…
