Comparing Mrs. Dickinson Poem And A Noiseless Patient Spider

Decent Essays
So I have decided to read both Mrs. Dickinson poem and Mr. Whitman’s A Noiseless Patient Spider poem. I feel like both are very interesting reads and both individual are geniuses. While reading “I am Nobody. Who Are You?” I honestly had to read it twice and both times I got a different interpretation. In my first read through, I took from it that it was some kind of secret relationship between two people who did not want to have it go public. I waited a few days a gave it a second read and came to the conclusion that it was speaking more being approach or approaching someone famous or how society treats famous people versus regular people.
After reading the second poem I’ve drawn a conclusion that it is about a spider building a web. What

Fate is the development of events beyond the person's control. To some fate is believed to be predetermined, but too others fate is believed to be determined by yourself, that you have control over your fate. Throughout the years poets, authors as well as scientists connote their opinions on whether fate is predetermined or in control, that whether we have free will or not. Two opposing titles, “Design” a modern piece of poetry, a petrarchan sonnet and the other “Outliers” a modern day expository text. The piece “Design” by Robert Frost demonstrates how Fate is predetermined by nature through the relationship between a spider and a moth utilizing metaphors imagery and comparison.…

Have you ever read a novel or poem that had characters in them that allowed the characters to show strength during the face of adversity? I have read two novels and a poem where that is the case. The first one is the novel Ethan Forme written by Edith Wharton. Zeena showed strength when she knew her cousin Mattie and husband Ethan were getting way to close with their relationship. But Zeena did not give up.…

Both Emily Dickinson’s and Walt Whitman’s poems have numerous differences. Their writing styles differ as well, in that Emily Dickinson’s are short and simple, while Walt Whitman’s are long, complex and largely prose-style. In Whitman’s work, “Song of Myself”, you learn much about the author. The poem was written in phases, and on page 1024, the notes at the bottom of the page describe how the title of this poem was changed throughout the years. I think this is a semblance of how the poem’s meaning to Whitman changed and developed throughout the years.…

Loneliness Is Inevitable “(and noone stooped to kiss his face)” (Cummings, 26). In Fitzgerald’s novel characters like Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, and Myrtle Wilson all have aspects of their personal lives that make it seem as though they are lonely in life as a result of decisions they have made in the past. In Cummings poem there are different ways to interpret the underlying meaning between the words. For his characters, noone and anyone, readers could take them as literally noone and anyone or as certain people going through life.…

In one of Whitman’s poems ( “A Noiseless, Patient Spider”) Walt connects the life of a human to the spider by saying how the spider “ventures” through the “vacant, vast surroundings…” He also writes about the “thread” that connects the spider to the world and humans being connected with the “bridge” that one will build with the spheres of life.” In the second stanza’s last line Whitman talks about his soul which is individualism and the works of men working with gossamer thread and spider using filament.…

My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…

The poem “To Myself” by W.S. Merwin had me very, very confused the first few times reading through it. It wasn't until I payed closer attention to the title of the piece that it all came together. I, at first, could not for the life of me figure out who the author was referring to in the poem. I thought, maybe a lost love one or maybe some abstract idea such as death or time. By the time that I actually got around to reading the title again I felt like a total buffoon.…

Poetry, unlike standard prose, is meant to be read aloud. In order to utilise the oral nature of poetry, poets often add structural and sonic elements that enhance the meanings behind their poems. Emily Dickinson, an American poet in the mid 19th century, used these techniques frequently. One example of this occurs in the poem, “The Soul selects her own Society,” in which Dickinson describes the process of choosing whom one associates with. The renowned poet explains that people often selects only a few other people to truly befriend and socialize with.…

Morenike Ibidapo Design by Robert Frost is a poem that seems to be describing a moment in time, when one is observing a spider on a heal-all, with a moth caught in the spider’s web. There is not much action in the poem, in fact, the only action taking place is the speaker looking at this scene in nature. It seems that through this observation, Frost is saying that some grand design may be responsible for creating this scene in nature. In this poem, Frost uses a series of metaphors and an altered rhyme scheme to express his feelings of victimization and to pose unanswerable questions to the Creator regarding why life was created as it was. This poem has 14 lines organized into two stanzas: one octave and one sestet.…

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two highly influential poets from America during the 1800’s; critics as being radical as it rejected the traditional conventions of death in a dominantly Puritan state describe their poetry. Both poets were fascinated by the theme death throughout their poetry, although their depictions of death were different, both poets shared the similar concept that death leads to immortality and therefore should be embraced. However, despite sharing similarities in their overall message, both Whitman and Dickinson possessed unique writing styles different from the other. This can be seen in Whitman’s epic A Song of Myself, which employs the use of free verse; a form not constricted by regular rhyme or meter. Dickinson’s…

Emily Dickinson is well known for her unusual poems, however during her life she wasn’t famous till after she passed away when her family started to find 1000’s of her poems stuff in tiny spaces all around the house. Dickinson’s writing wasn’t well understood during her time, she had a uniqueness that was ahead of her time; she had an amazing use of symbols, capitalism, themes and tones in her writing which make reading her poems so intriguing. While growing up she wasn’t the average women, she had her own thoughts and beliefs which is something I love about her which brings me to one of my favorite poems by her: “I’m Nobody!
