“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff are completely different short stories, but their characters and imagery are very similar. From a cold, winter forest to a humid, sticky forest, the stories’ settings are as polar opposite as possible. These stories may have very different settings, but they have startling comparisons between the protagonists, the antagonists, and the plots. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game,” there are two main characters. Rainsford is the protagonist and Zaroff is the antagonist. The conflict of this story is man versus man or good versus evil. Rainsford is a dynamic character is the story. He starts out hunting for fun. However, in the end, Rainsford has an epiphany and sees how cruel hunting is as a game. Zaroff is a static character that begins the book hunting humans for fun, but dies by a human because of his obsession. This story takes place on an island called Ship-Trap Island where Zaroff lives (Connell 62). “The Most Dangeorous Game” focuses on the color black because the setting is mostly at night when the men are hunting (Connell 74). …show more content…
All three of the characters are evil. This story has a conflict of man versus something greater than himself. Kenny thinks it is funny to make fun of Tub, but, because he takes it a bit too far, gets killed (Wolff 85). Frank seems to be a nice guy, but later shows that he is having an affair with his babysitter (Wolff 89). Tub is overweight and, toward end of the book, tells Frank about his eating disorder (Wolff 91). All these men are static characters because they never change their problematic ways. “Hunters in the Snow” takes place on a winter day (Wolff 79). The story puts emphasis on the color white because it is on a snowy winter day. This seems ironic because white is a pure color, and these men are all

As they conversate they even laugh and joke about everything that has happened to them as well as calling Kenny a card. Up until the accident Kenny had always been the alpha male of the group while Tub was a weakling. As their leader Kenny asserted his dominance and expressed that they are all grown men that should be able to handle their problems personally. His statements do not hold weight however because he has no problems to battle against. Ever since the moment Kenny came crashing through with his truck to when he was laying in the back of the truck he demonized Tub’s inability to be healthy and lose weight; furthermore, he also ridiculed Frank for his love towards a 15 year old.…

The author of the book The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell, put an amazing amount of imagery in this book to enhance the plot. The imagery enhanced the ploy by making the reader feel like they are on ship - trap island. Richard Connell talks about the tropical island, and makes you have the exact tropical island he was thinking of when he wrote the story. Another use that enhances the story is the use of ironicness, metaphors, and similes. A use of a metaphor is “The sea was as flat as a plate - glass window”.…

In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there’s a movie and a short story. In the movie and in the story Rainsford and Zaroff has two different personalities. In the story, Rainsford is stronger and tougher than Zaroff, but it’s the other way around because Rainsford is a lot softer and nicer in the movie. Connell changes some things between the short story and the move. Maybe he was trying to get us to understand how every character has two different sides a caring and a stubborn side.…

A Good Rewrite is Hard to Find In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the thrilling story of a skilled hunter named Rainsford, who washes up on a mysterious island where he falls captive to General Zaroff, a psychopathic man that preys on “the scum of the earth” simply for the thrill and excitement of the hunt. Richard Connell predominantly uses character interactions to build suspense as the plot progresses, utilizing dialogue to create a mysterious tone and to foreshadow the predicaments that Rainsford will soon find himself in. During the conversation between Whitney and Rainsford on the yacht, Whitney tells Rainsford that he felt an oddly distinct chill while sailing past the supposedly cursed island, even though "there was no breeze [and the] sea was as flat as a plate-glass window" (Connell 2).…
