Both protagonists from this two stories are trying to escape the facts. Without any friends and family, Miss Brill is trying to escape the fact that she is old and lonely. Since she has nothing to do, she goes to the park every Sunday and buy "a slice of honeycake at the baker's" on her way home. Besides, Miss Brill is just like a leaf that "[comes] drifting from nowhere, from the sky"; no one will cares about her. Similarly, The Boss is also suffering from loneliness because of the death of his son, which makes him keep trying to escape this fact. And he has never visits his son's grave because "[he] never [thinks] of the boy except as lying unchanged unblemished in his uniform, asleep for ever".
