Comparing Miss Brill And The Fly

Frustrations are unable for people to escape but to realize and overcome. People will encounter many setbacks in the world. For example, The Boss from "The Fly" loses his son and Miss Brill is suffering from loneliness and ageing. They are living in their own world and refuse to communicate with others. According to the stories, Miss Brill finally realizes that she has been living in an imaginary world but The Boss still unwilling to realize what happens to his son.

Both protagonists from this two stories are trying to escape the facts. Without any friends and family, Miss Brill is trying to escape the fact that she is old and lonely. Since she has nothing to do, she goes to the park every Sunday and buy "a slice of honeycake at the baker's" on her way home. Besides, Miss Brill is just like a leaf that "[comes] drifting from nowhere, from the sky"; no one will cares about her. Similarly, The Boss is also suffering from loneliness because of the death of his son, which makes him keep trying to escape this fact. And he has never visits his son's grave because "[he] never [thinks] of the boy except as lying unchanged unblemished in his uniform, asleep for ever".

Miss Brill cries after hearing the young couple say that she is "stupid", "old" and her "fu-fur" is "exactly like a fried whiting". Then she sits down on the red eiderdown for a long time, thinking, finally she decides to put her necklet and fox-fur away. With realizing that she has been living in a fantasy world. On the contrary, instead of accepting the death of his son, he tortures the fly. He drops ink on the fly, watch its "struggling legs" and keep repeating this motion until the fly dies. After it all, he feels "a real admiration for the fly's courage" and he thinks "never say die" is the "right spirit". The fly remains him his son; he still feels grieved about his
