The romanticism movement in literature came about during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The German poet Friedrich Schlegel, who is given recognition for originally using the term romantic to describe literature. Schlegel defined it as "literature depicting emotional matter in an imaginative form." With the comparison and contrast of two stories, “The Minister’s Black Veil” By Hawthorne, and “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Poe, two well established short stories that paved the pathway for several romanticism literature books to come.
