Comparing Marius And My Writing

Studies show that our mind organizes and create thoughts while we sleep; proofreading before falling asleep, helps process new thoughts and helps us to retain the material better. According to Richard Marius his study is based on the idea that in writing, there is a process that we must go through, this includes writing multiple drafts before producing the final draft. Based off his writing process procedure, Marius and I have complete different approaches, in our writing style. I’m more focused on one thought; while Marius believes that keeping an open mind helps produced new thoughts that would not have occurred from the beginning. To illustrate the difference between Marius and my writing, I’m going to compare my writing assignment for my Math 110 to his process of writing. Starting this assignment, I constructed one rough draft and checked for any errors. Once my professor asked for our rough drafts; the feedback I received was that I needed to add a cover page, and then my essay would be finished. My process of writing for this assignment consisted of sitting on the computer for hours until I finished the essay. …show more content…
The idea on this paper for math 110 was to write about a famous mathematician and from the start I was able to go with the flow. For the single thought, I wrote about his famous discoveries about how he contributed to our current mathematical system. On the contrary, Marius believes that we as writers have an idea and we don’t always stick to it. He states, “Writers often start an essay with one topic in mind only to discover that another pushes the first one aside as they work” (Marius,91). When I began writing my paper I stuck to the information that I’d previously researched, so I didn’t change my initial thought. I added information but since it’s a research paper it was not considered changing my thoughts, since its data that I collected through the

Anne Lamott from Bird by Bird (1994) explains to us in her article that we all need to write those “shitty first drafts” in order for us to write the “sometimes brilliance second and third drafts.” Anne Lamott is an entertaining writer and makes some very valid points about why it is important to let go in your first drafts. Lamott explains that writing does not come easy even to the best of writers and compares it to pulling teeth. Our first draft in writing should be our “child’s draft;” where we pour out all of our thoughts in an attempt to organize it into our writing. Anne Lamott explains to us that sometimes she just needs to type to get her fingers moving, or even type her first draft twice as long as it needs to be.…

Observation Report: Writing Assignment The writing assignment that I observed was a literary analysis that describes the theme of “The Cask of Amontillado” through his display of the main character’s motives. The students were instructed to provide specific examples from the text, as well as clear reasoning that explains and connects their evidence to their response. The day that I was there to observe the class the mentor teacher was finishing the unit by having the students write a five paragraph essay using a worksheet packet that they had been working on for the past several days.…

My own ideas have to room to grow and creatively wonder without being bogged down by the idea of a prompt. When my thoughts are free flowing I find I am thinking much more about what I am saying and what I want to say rather than what should be said. I find this to be an extremely positive influence in my writing- all due to the ideas that Graff lays out in this article “Clueless in Academe How Schooling Obscures the Mind”. In relationship to this I have found that the time in which it takes me to create these ideas and even the writing process in general has decreased. I find this to be a direct…

Regardless, I do wish that I would have started outside of class earlier, so that I could have spent more time for editing and checking for details. Time management was something I noticed most for the second essay, the visual text analysis. Finding a interesting text was hard, and finding reliable secondary sources was even harder, even with the Columbus State Online Database. Although some researching took place outside of school, most of the actual essay writing took place in school during the work days. Even with the unexpected amount of research that I had, managing time was not a great concern for me.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
