Comparing Marita´s Bargain And The Wife Of Bath's Tale

J.M. Barrie, in Peter Pan, once said “Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.” In “Marita’s Bargain” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” both main characters sacrifice something willingly to get what they really want. In the end, the Knight and Marita were fully reimbursed for their sacrifices and feel that they were worth it.
Similarly, in both tales, both characters sacrifice something. “I wake up at five-forty-five a.m. to get a head start,” Marita states in Maritas Bargain. (pg 264 lines 3-4) Marita had to wake up early and sacrifice her time on weekends and after school to get better grades and obtain a better future. In a similar fashion the Knight sacrificed

“I leave school at five p.m., and if I don’t lollygag around, then I will get home around five-thirty. Then I say hi to my mom really quick and start my homework.” (Page 264 Lines 22-23) this exemplifies how Marita, in Marita’s Bargain chose to give up her time because she wanted to succeed in life rather than fall behind like the kids in her old school were before she left.“This knight thought hard about it and sighed deeply; but at last he spoke in this manner: “My lady and love, and my dear wife, I put myself into your wise governance. Please choose which may be the greatest pleasure and greatest honor to you and me also; I care not which of the two, for it is sufficient to me to please you.” (Lines 1229-1235) This quote shows how the Knight willingly chose to sacrifice his sovereignty and give it up to the old lady because he would be stuck with an old ugly lady for life if he …show more content…
“Sometimes I don’t go to sleep when I’m supposed to,” Marita continued. “I go to sleep at, like, twelve o’clock, and the next afternoon, it will hit me. And I will doze off in class. But then I have to wake up because I have to get the information.” (Page 265 Lines 16-20) It is evident Marita did not do anything malicious to come to the point of sacrifice. When she made her sacrifice, she was rewarded with good grades and excelled in her new school. “Then I have the mastery over you,” she said, “since I may choose and govern as I wish” “Yes, surely, wife,” he said; “I believe that is for the best.”(Lines 1236-1238) This quote from The Wife of Bath Tales directly shows how the Knight raped a woman and was going to get killed for it if he didn’t find out what women desire the most. The answer was to have sovereignty over their husband, which the old lady persuaded him to comply to. When he made the sacrifice, he was rewarded and the old ugly lady turned into a young beautiful

Just like the woman the man was defined by a certain action, “defined by who he is, his quests and his victories” (Reynolds 1). However, the honor of the man is a defining factor of his morals, in “The Wife of Bath's Tale” the knight is tested on his own honor. The knight exchanged knowledge for his honor, “But for God’s love think of a new request, Take all my goods, but leave my body free.” (Wife of Bath’s Tale).…
