Comparing Lying In Romeo And Juliet And The Emperor's Club

We have all had that moment when lying seems like the best answer… but is it really? In the play “Romeo and Juliet” and the movie “The Emperor’s Club” the lesson that can be taken is lying is never a good option. In both stories lying is used to make what seems like a better outcome but really ends in nothing but problems. The idea is conveyed in each story by characters lying to get what they want. In “The Emperor’s Club” lying is showed through two characters, Mr. Hundert and Sedgewick Bell. The characters were attempting to make a better outcome in the end but they just created betrayal and problems. For example Mr. Hundert changed Sedgewick’s score to make him eligible to win the Julius Caesar contest. Mr. Hundert took away Martin Blythe’s opportunity to win by giving it to someone who did not care and cheated in attempt to win. Another way lying was shown was Sedgewick cheating during the Julius Caesar contest. Sedgewick proved his teacher wrong and did not deserve to even compete. Later Sedgewick learns his lesson about cheating and why he should not have done it. It turned out that his son heard the conversation between his dad and Mr.Hundert, so Sedgewick realized what a poor role model he was for his son. Last way lying is conveyed is, Mr. Hundert did not say anything about Sedgewick cheating. By not calling him out nobody knew he cheated so he still had a great reputation on the outside. However it’s a different story on the inside with Sedgewick. “Romeo and Juliet” also displays many acts of lying that lead to issues with the story.
