Not much is known about Lady Montague, but there are a few things that have come to light. Unlike her counterpart in the opposing house, Lady Capulet, Lady Montague is more peaceful and suave in her manner. She cares for her family and dislikes the long standing feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. When Romeo is at the street fight in the middle of Verona between Tybalt and Mercutio, Lady Montague states her happiness that he wasn’t hurt during that fight. They still have high standards but they aren’t as rich or snobby as the Capulets are claimed to be. They also have very strict beliefs but they aren’t as strict as the Capulets are. Possibly both Romeo and Juliet saw the differences between their family’s views but they figured that neither was right, a happy medium was what would work best. Lady Montague supported her son’s decisions to want to be in love with Juliet, it was impossible to tell what would happen next. After hearing word of her son’s banishment to Mantua for killing Tybalt, she was overcome by grief. Lady Montague fell a victim to the untimely disease of heartbreak and died. This took everyone by surprise. When Romeo got word of his mother’s death he made a vow to attend her funeral, but tragically he never got the chance to attend. The Montagues went from a possible marriage to Rosaline, to burying both Romeo and Lady Montague. The Capulets went through this experience as well, going from the Juliet and Paris marriage, to having to bury Tybalt and Juliet. If Lady Montague were still alive she would have been devastated about her son’s death but joyous that the feud would end. Once both families realized that the feud caused their only heirs deaths, they knew it was time to stop. Finally. Finally the people of Verona had some peace.
