It is a delicate yet wonderful thing that should always be cherished, but the road to love is quite the bumpy one. With “Cyrano De Bergerac”, a book by Edmond Rostand, and “O’ Were I Loved as I Desire to be” a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, they both collectively collaborate to get this message across. However, these texts also have significant differences as well. Case in point, the pieces use different plot devices and literary techniques in order to express their theme of how love is difficult.
Through close comparison and analyzation, we can identify that both of these works reveal a similar theme of the struggles of love. For instance, it says in the book: “Afraid that when you have her all alone, you lose all.” ( Rostand pg. 100) This quote is showing how Cyrano is worried about losing the heart of Roxane, causing him to become self conscious and anxious. In the poem, it states: “That I would fear, not clasped hand in hand with thee.” (Tennyson line 9) Similar to Cyrano, the speaker obviously worries that he would not “be loved as he desires to be,” which leads to mixed feelings of joy and courage to sadness and anxiety. For instance, the story states: “That blossom in my heart, I’ll fling to you!” (Rostand pg. 127) This is an example of how due to Roxane loving Christian rather than Cyrano, Cyrano must pretend to be Christian in order to confess his feelings for her. Another representation of this is where it states: “When I think of you, I tremble.” ( Rostand pg. 127) Yet again, Cyrano is conveying his feelings through Roxane’s love interest, Christian, revealing how he wants to believe that Roxane loves him, but although she doesn’t even know that he loves

In Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, the theme of love is constant throughout the whole play. The main love interests consists of Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian, but the three overshadow another love line between Ragueneau and his wife, Lise. Although the two are married, the real love line is between Ragueneau and poetry. Though the two are rather small characters and lack appearances, Ragueneau shows that love does not have to be found in a person and that it is important to find one’s passion and true self even if it costs something in return. Ragueneau is a pastry chef who, like Cyrano, has a deep love for poetry.…

I want the audience to feel closer to Cyrano- and will first grow to love and admire him, and gradually shift to liking him- when he professes his love for Roxane. When Christian ends up marrying Roxane with Cyrano’s help, the audience should be infuriated, because in the end, outer beauty prevailed over inner beauty. We hear our whole lives that “ It’s not about what’s on the outside, but what’s in the inside”, but that is obviously not true in this play. At the same time however, the audience should understand that Cyrano’s inability to tell Roxane how he feels and to tell her the truth is strictly his own…

He states that desire has tried to pursue him “in vain” because no matter how hard it tried, the speaker no longer let it provoke him. He expresses that it has “taught” him a “better lesson” to only look within himself instead of looking around at others. Unfortunately his realization resulted in that he has the intention to “kill desire.” He wishes to destroy the thing that has caused him so much pain and made him an imbecile. This creates an ironic tone because throughout the poem he speaks of desire as such a sinister entity and explains how it can “mangle” one’s mind and make someone a “fool;” although, he recognizes its consequences, the speaker can not escape its aggressive clutch.…
