Comparing Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk To Water

Sudan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Constant war is always going on, and to be a child in the mix is very horrifying. It’s very hard and scary to try to be a leader knowing you could die at any given moment. In the book, A Long Walk to Water, two different stories with two main characters, Salva and Nya. Both stories take place in Sudan. While war is happening, surviving is far more important than anything else. In Linda Sue Park's’ novel, you’ll keep wanting to read more and more. A boy named Salva who became a refugee from the war, soon realizes that he has to take initiative and become an independent leader. It was just a regular day in school for Salva until he heard gunshots. “CRACK!”(5) Was a loud sharp noise that came from outside of the school. No one really knew what it was, so the teacher and the students just continued learning, until… “CRACK! Pop-Pop-CRACK!”(5) Now they knew, gunshots. Immediately the teacher made the kids get onto the ground. “Into the bush, not home.”(6) The teacher and all the students were in peril from the gunfire. The teacher made the students run into the bush to keep the fighting away from the villages. The shooting came from the rebels of Sudan going against the government. How he started was just a refugee of a war in Sudan. After surviving in Sudan and Ethiopia Salva took initiative and became a leader of an all boy group. He was able to lead them to Kenya and Salva stayed there until he was twenty-two years old. Salva’s name finally was put on the bulletin board to fly over to the United States, become a citizen, and have an adopted family. Soon after that, Salva finally heard from Sudan. His father was in a clinic and going to have surgery on his stomach. So Salva started raising money to go and see his father and to build fresh water wells all around Africa for clean water to drink and
