Comparing Lamb To The Slaugi And The Necklace

Fawn Weaver once said, “ The greatest marriages are built on teamwork. A mutual respect, a healthy dose of admiration, and a never ending portion of love and grace.” In other words, marriage requires commitment and commitment is neither natural nor effortless. This exact theme is supported and portrayed within The Necklace, Lamb to the Slaughter, and The Gift of the Magi. All three relationships, whether broken or thriving, prove that failure is prone no matter how compatible two people are. Moreover, while Fawn’s statement is true, a flourishing marriage requires other factors such as truth, friendship, and sacrifice.
For instance, Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace”, demonstrates how one sided relationships can lead to the physical and emotional draining of both partners. Mathilde Loisel was an obstinate character; charming, self entitled, and had the most surreal expectations.

Ironically, the supposed innocent wife, hence the story’s title, resolved to killing. Furthermore, it can be assumed that the couple had no established friendship, let alone a functioning relationship. Since they acted on impulse alone and lacked the ability to talk through disagreements, the relationship

After ten years of hard work have hardened her, she once again encounters Madame Forestier, the woman she borrowed the diamond necklace from. Madame Forestier has remained young and beautiful, unburdened by debts and manual labor. Her explanation of the necklace’s true nature introduces the key ingredient to Maupassant’s tale: irony. Along with the obvious irony of the ten years spent laboring relentlessly to pay off a now unnecessary debt, the irony manifests in another form. The necklace, which causes so much grief, transforms her from a vain, selfish, and petty girl into a woman that loves and lives within her…
