Kino notices a tiny movement on the rope over Coyotito's hanging box which was, however, a scorpion. Just before Kino can get to the scorpion, Coyotito shakes the rope and the scorpion fall onto his shoulder and stings him. Juana tried to suck the poison from the baby's shoulder. When that did not work she decided she would take the baby to the self-absorbent doctor. The neighbors gathered and were very skeptical because going to the doctor was so unheard, of because he was greedy, nevertheless; they followed Juana and Kino to the city.
