Comparing John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Should “Of Mice and Men” be taught in schools today? This question has been extensively debated over the past few years and is still currently being debated today. The Nobel Prize of Literature was rewarded to John Steinbeck in 1962 “for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humor and keen social perception.” (www.nobelprize.org). Published in 1937, “Of Mice and Men” is an appealing, classic novel and has been recognized for its descriptive writing style that Steinbeck possesses to illustrate of the time during the Great Depression. Despite the effective writing style, many people have criticized the novel for containing the improper use of English and the inappropriate interpretation upon society. Because of these reasons, many schools and libraries have banned this novel. For example: “Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunk house, inside it was dusk” (p.38), “The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering” (p.106), “A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside and runs deep and green” (p.1). This descriptive writing can help students be inspired to write better and therefore make them successful in the future. The themes that are included in Steinbeck’s writing can teach important life lessons in our daily lives. For instance, the theme of social responsibility can show students that people taking care of each other can help society as well as their own
