John Cabot was born Giovanni Caboto. He did not change his name. Giovanni Caboto is the Italian version of his name. John Cabot is the English version. He was born in Genoa, Italy around 1450. His father was a spice merchant. His fathers name was Giulio or Egidius Caboto. When Cabot was eleven, he and his family moved to the beautiful artisan city of Venice, Italy. It was in Venice that Cabot first learned to sail. He was taught the skill by Italian seamen and various other merchants.

He would eventually marry her. They had three sons named Ludorico, Sancto, and Sebastiano (Sebastian). In 1476, Cabot obtained a Venetian citizenship. On March twenty-eighth, Cabot was naturalized. In the 1490’s, John Cabot moved to the sea port town of Bristol, England. Cabot heard of grant opportunities from King Henry VII. Cabot told King Henry VII of his belief that sailing west from Europe would be a shorter route to Asia. King Henry VII gave Cabot a grant to “seek out, discover, and find” new lands for England. “For the next several decades, Cabot’s exact activities are unknown; he may have spent several years in Valencia and Seville, Spain, and may have been in Valencia in 1493, when Columbus passed through the city on his way to report to the Spanish monarchs the results of his western voyage (including his mistaken belief that he had in fact reached Asia). By late 1495, Cabot had reached Bristol, England, a port city that had served as a starting point for several previous expeditions across the North Atlantic. From there, he worked to convince the British crown that England did not have to stand aside while Spain claimed most of the New World, and that it was possible to reach Asia on a more northerly route than the one Columbus had
