Every character has their share of good and bad qualities. Even those who seem good at first, like No-Face and Haku have their fair share of evil qualities. Such as, No-Face’s greed and want for Chihiro causing him to destroy and devour many members of the bathhouse. Chihiro at the beginning is extremely unpleasant at first, only when she becomes Sen is when her good nature is finally shown. One of the examples of this theme, is how hated Chihiro was by the bathhouse workers until her ultimate acts of goodness, such as saving them from No-Face, brings out the latent goodness in them. The film is important because it teaches lessons to its audience; such as when Chihiro’s parents are turned into pigs from them greed and gluttony. Or the lesson that no one is completely evil or good, that every character makes evil and good decisions; such as, when Haku is presented as good at the beginning of the film, but steals an artifact from Yu-baba’s sister to be as powerful as Yu-baba herself. As said by Critic Bob Smithouser the film wags an accusing finger at greed and gluttony, and hard work and inner decency are celebrated in Chihiro’s character which shows a lesson to the audience.
