Comparing Jack And Algernon

Improved Essays
The point that you've raised about Jack and Algernon where you talk about how Jack is better suited for a higher class rather than Algernon is something I did not see, but when you pointed it out it made a lot of sense. I do believe that that point is very true because of the way the Algernon behaves around other people. He is almost behaves the complete opposite to how Jack/Earnest behaves. While Jack is being polite, and well-mannered, Algernon is making jokes of a serious situation.
For example, when Jack and Gwendolen are discussing their relationship's future, Gwendolen asks Algernon to turn around: "Algy, kindly turn you back. I have something very particular to say to Mr. Worthing," (1. 767-768). This is a request a respectful upperclassman

What are the underlying psychological aspects that you see involved with Jack’s rejection of his father’s wishes? How might you explain the fact that in many ways he became what his father did not want him to become? One of the underlying factors seems to stem from Ericson’s “initiative versus guilt” stage. Because Jack’s father did not allow Jack to pick personally meaningful activities, Jack may have developed guilt over making independent choices, which has made setting goals difficult. His decision to continue in school against his father’s wishes seem both an attempt at autonomy and also a desire to stay in the “id”, in a place he felt comfortable that didn’t require him to make big life decisions.…

Greed is a common influence on characters seen in literature. Its effects can vary from causing slight tension to destroying lives. The pieces Frankenstein, “The Bloody Chamber”, “Goblin Market”, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Importance of Being Earnest all use development to display the effects of greed on both the individual experiencing it and on those close to him or her. Serious things such as marriage and love are made trivial, and trivial things such as names and food are made serious. This switch reduces the characters to an absurdity that makes the readers question the motivations and values of the characters, and the individuals living at this time. Wilde focuses on exposing the differences between how the upper and lower class act. Members of the upper class express immense pride and obsession with maintaining their status in society, while members of the lower class are much more humble and less uptight. Wilde satirizes the arrogance and hypocrisy of the upper class and displays how the aristocratic groups tend to value appearance more than substance, or reality.…
