Comparing J. K Rowling's The Hunger Games And Veronica Roth

A white scalloped shelf in the corner for as long as I can remember holds all the books I’ve ever read. From books I learned to read with to the ones my mom has tried to get me to read for years. Over the past fourteen years my taste in books has evolved from Daisy Meadows fairy stories, to young adult books, to ones with more serious and realistic topics. Ever since I read my first Dr. Seuss book aloud in class, I have loved reading. I would spend hours in my room reading then march downstairs to let everyone marvel at what a smart young girl I was. Reading has always been one of the few things I’m good at, and being a the daughter of two english majors who love to read, a way to connect with my parents. The first books I ever felt a connection to and could share my love of it with other people were J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series. My best friend, to this day, Grace and I read the books at the same time and would come to school every day and talk about them. Our friendship was created from our shared love of Harry Potter, which soon evolved into Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games and Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogies. We saw every movie together, recreated every scene, went through dauntless initiation, survived the hunger games, and created spells. Together. I can safely say …show more content…
I started reading (and loving) books by Gayle Forman and Jodi Picoult like; If I stay, Where She Went, I Was Here, and My Sister’s Keeper. These books were more grown-up and sophisticated than the books i've read in the past. They had more serious and realistic situations that were often sad but included a love story. My favorite part of every book is when the main characters realize what I have known all along; that they love each other. I started to read Nicholas Sparks books like The Longest Ride and The Best of Me that make me cry and laugh and scream and smile all at the same

The coming of age story template has been around for thousands of years, and has stayed the same throughout those years. The template has not died despite it’s seemingly eternal existence. For example, the novels ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ are vastly similar. Although the subjects are totally different, they are the same. From the plot to the character relationships, there are glaring similarities between the two.…

Overall my experience with reading has been forced, and limited and has lost its original glamour. For me what reading novels brings to other people, I can obtain through other means that are more appealing for my way of thinking. While I don’t enjoy the act of reading a 600 page mandatory novel, I do enjoy the conversations that it can cause. Such as the debating, and sometimes the arguments, that come from the material within the carefully thought out cover pages can be intriguing and rewarding. However, to say that books have influenced my thoughts about the world, or have made…

Because I thought that you couldn’t learn from reading, I stopped and lost my interest for reading. After reading 1984 and Cat’s Cradle over summer, my passion for reading was rekindled. These two books illustrated how a fictional book is capable of being educational. From these two books, I finally understood that…

When we moved back to Los Fresnos, my mom would take my brother and I to the library in the summer at the beginning of my sixth grade year. I remember the first time my mother took my brother and I to the library. The long rows of bookshelves were a true sight to behold. In that instant, it was as if my mom read my mind. “Now, let’s go get you two your first library card.”…

When I was younger, I always kept a book by me. Books accompanied me everywhere, to the mall and to my relatives houses. I was called a bookworm, and still called it today. I’ve read books, and collected them. I have over 100 books in my room, and have a library in my house.…

This changed however, following a diagnosis with Attention Deficit Disorder towards the end of kindergarten; by the end of the year he had picked up reading with ease, and by the time 1st grade rolled around he was placed in the advanced reading group consisting of the 6 best readers in the class. The spark in the young boy’s heart had taken hold and continued to grow, demanding more and more fuel in the form of bigger, harder, more interesting books. The books enchanted him, they possessed the power to create rich new worlds with each turn of the page, and it wasn’t like TV where he merely spectated these worlds, no, with the books they burst to life around him, engulfing him with their wondrous words. When the boy reached the age of 8 he had already read the first five Harry Potter books, finishing the 850 page 5th book in only a week, and was reading so much that his 3rd grade teacher was threatening to take his books away during the school…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

In the Hunger Games, the most important similarities the movie shared with the book was making Peeta initiate the idea of him and Katniss being lovers. This is so significant because, without this, most of the main events in the book and movie would never have taken place. For one, this angle would have left Katniss to be just another face in the crowd, not making her stand out, which also meant fewer sponsors, decreasing her chances of survival. However, the most important reason for this is because Katniss would have left Peeta to die when he needed her the most and she would not have been able to plant the small seeds of defiance against the capital. In the movie and novel, the games take a surprising turn when an announcement goes out that…

In The Hunger Games, author Suzanne Collins presents the idea that distractions led by cowardice and fear keep people from involving themselves in more important matters. Especially when people are fearful for something in the future. In society people have things that they’d rather delay for as long as possible. They will be too distracted by the fact that they don’t want something to happen, that they don’t even realize that something is going on below the surface.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

    J. K. Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…

But the best moment of staying in this room is with my mother. My mother gotten me to open up my eyes to see that there is more to books than just words, that it is our imagination that brings the books to life. “When you picture the place of the setting or the characters in the book, it’s going to be different when others picture it.” is what my mother said to change my way of reading books and guided me to read different books.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
