Three different social groups are looked at in Life of Pi, that being Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. The mainstream religion in Pondicherry is Hinduism. Islam is inferior compared to Hinduism and Christianity. In the middle of the novel, the Priest, the Pundit, and the Imam argue over whose religion is greater and justify their answers. Both, the Pundit and the Priest come to agree that Islam is a religion based on violence. All three men do not know much about the other’s religion, but they still speak down upon the other 's faith. In the novel, individuals are discriminated against based on their religion. When the Priest, the Pundit, and the Imam gain knowledge of Pi following all three religions, they are infuriated. The three men want Pi to believe in their religion and only their religion; they tried to make a strong case about why their religion was superior to the rest. At the moment, each of the three men strongly dislike each other and forget to love one another, for they are all God’s children. It is evident that the Imam feels strongly about the other religions. The Imam says, “They strayed long ago from God’s path” (74). The Imam refers to Christianity; from this, I can see that the Imam does not think highly of the religion, Christianity. In Life of Pi, Islam is marginalized, which is evident when the Pundit makes a strong point against Islam by saying, “And with their one god Muslims are always causing troubles and provoking riots.
