Both Harper Lee and Rudolpho Anaya use similar writing styles to move along their plot lines and to transport the reader into the story. Two key elements that the writers use are time and speech. The way the books pass time is very interesting. They tend to spend entire chapters focusing in on a small portion of time, anywhere between a few hours or a week, and in this amount of time, something very significant happens. Then after the big moments are past, the book will devote a few sentences to summing up a very large amount of time, whether that be a few weeks, a season, or very commonly: the school year.…

His study had supported the fact that people were being unfair on Haig and the other generals. He described them as ‘ruddy-cheeked, bristling-moustached, heavy-jawed, frequently inarticulate generals,’ portraying the typical caricature of a WW1 general, who faced many challenges.…

. “Now,” said the demon, in a voice that carried with it no sorrow, no relish, only a dreadful flat resignation, “you will be tortured.” Like this quote, the voice of the demon is created through simple, short sentences but very descriptive. Gaiman decided to go against this approach and decided to describe hell as empty with no flames, just you sitting there with only the demon while you are tortured by having to live through your sins again.…

Despite these and many more similarities, there are also notable differences in the two storylines. One example of a great difference is that there is a time difference in the versions of the story.
