Comparing Heroes And Villains In Beowulf

Throughout history epic battles between hero’s and villains have been told and reconstructed. The “good guy” or the hero, always beats the “bad guy” the villain, and they are traditionally two separate beings. Yet, now day it is becoming more and more common for the hero and villain war to be found in the same individual. As the world gets more corrupt, and as evils more easily finds its way to the common people, the battle now resides within those individuals. Within each individual there is a constant battle between hero and villain and it is up to them to decide which will prevail; the hero destined for greatness or the villain doomed to fail. In, Beowulf, we follow the story of the Hero, Beowulf. Beowulf is a classic hero, he is strong, mighty, selfless, and driven to do good. A villain is savage, evil, and cold, so ralph had to resist succumbing to the beast even when most of the other stranded had already given in. He had to stand alone, as hero’s often do, and fight for the safety and protection of those who threatened to unleash his beast. Ralph, though he fell to temptation a few times, was able to tame his beast and win the fight for heroism. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, since they are the same person, did not only chose one life style but both. Dr. Jekyll walked the path of a hero while at he same time his dual personality walked that of a villain. Jekyll chose to fight for good, and Hyde for evil, so it is only fair that Jekyll be awarded the title of hero and hyde that of villain. A hero is one who fights on behalf of what is good and protects the innocent, which was Jekyll’s motive.
