Comparing Harbour Porpoise And The Bottlenose Dolphin

Many people confuse porpoises with dolphins but they are actually different animals. They both are Cetaceans and have similar shapes but that’s about as far as their similarities go. The most confused species of porpoise and dolphin are the Harbour Porpoise and the Bottlenose Dolphin found in Britain’s seas. This is because from far away they look similar, but if you actually look at the two of them you would see they are very different. For the sake of simplicity, one can compare the differences between just the Harbour Porpoise and the Bottlenose Dolphin to show just how much of a difference there is between porpoises and dolphins. The Harbour Porpoise is a very small and secluded animal. They usually grow to only about 1.5m to 1.7m and can be found in groups of only 1 to 6, but are usually independent. Almost never approach boats, instead attempting to avoid them, shows how shy they really are. Their shyness is also shown by how people almost never seen more than their small dorsal fin breaking the water. They also usually hunt for food independently. Their very shy nature and very small shape causes them to be very different from the Bottlenose Dolphin (Dunn, Harrop, Still 88). …show more content…
They can grow to 1.9m to 3.9m, a much larger size than the Harbour Porpoise. Also unlike the Harbour Porpoise, they can be found in groups of 1 to 50, but are usually in groups of 5 to 25. Their friendliness is shown by how they “frequently breach, lob-tail and body-surf, as well as ride the bow-wave or wake of boats.”, very much unlike the Harbour Porpoise’s secluded nature. The Bottlenose Dolphin is also much more aggressive than the Harbour Porpoise to the point where there have been cases of Bottlenose Dolphins killing Harbour Porpoises. The Bottlenose’s large size and outgoing nature are great examples how different they are from the Harbour Porpoise (Dunn, Harrop, Still

Killer whales and dolphins jumped above the water and performed many difficult tricks their trainers commanded. Like many people, I have shared many great experiences with family and friends at marine parks. Aside from the really expensive food, these parks appear to have nothing wrong with them. However, people have yet to see beyond the stage and question how they get these large animals in the park. For over half a decade, marine parks have…

The marine mammal I have chosen to do my research paper on is the Orca Whale, also known as a killer whale. The genus or scientific name is Orcinus, also known as the killer whale. I have chosen to do my paper on this marine mammal because ever since I was young, I loved going to Sea World and watching the Shamu show. These incredible animals grow up to weigh as much as six tons and grow in length between 23 and 32 feet long, the relative size of a school bus. Orca or killer whales are easy to detect because of their distinctive markings, black and white coloring.…

Whales Whales in captivity is a horrible thing because the whales are separated from their familie, are forced to perform in front of screaming audiences, and they can act out and hurt humans and each other in small spaces. Male orca whales have collapsed dorsal fins. When there in the wild there dorsal fin stays straight up. When there in captivity there dorsal fin collapses. This is most likely because they are cramped up in a tight place so they can’t swim freely.…

Killer whales need more space to swim than the small captivity tanks allow them. Orcas are stored in small tanks and then they are put into a little bit bigger tank to perform. A study shows, “[c]aptive orcas are kept in pools that hold 00001% of the quantity of water they would normally traverse in one day” (Techmeier, 2015, 1). Placing these massive killer whales in a concrete box the size of a football field is not healthy. In the wild, they have so much more freedom, which causes them to be more happy unlike captivity.…

Throughout the course of history, mammals have evolved attempting to adapt to their changing environments. Since the world is continuingly changing, mammals needed to also change their habits and adjust so that they may continue to thrive and live. Three exemplary mammals that adapted so that they could exploit aquatic environments are the Orcinus orca, a cetacean, more commonly known as the killer whale, the Trichechus inunguis, a Sirenia, more commonly called the Amazonian manatee, and finally the Ornithorhynchus anatinus, a Monotreme, commonly known as the platypus. Each one of these mammals adapted differently to their specific niche, however, these adaptations or changes were so these mammals can fully exploit their new environments.…

They are driven close to shore, where they are then dragged onto the beach by a lance in an effort to sever their spines. Fishermen tend to claim that dolphins are a main factor in depleting the fish stock (similar to the American overkilling of wolves because of depletion of farm supply animals rather than relying on safer techniques, and have group hunts to take down pods of porpoises. According to the WDC, dolphin meat is often mislabelled as whale meat, which is often considered to be of much higher quality. Though dolphin meat is sold to hospitals and schools for consumption, it is shown to exceed the legal maximum amount of mercury at 0.4ppm, according to the WDC, and is therefore potentially toxic. It is not even small amounts of whales and dolphins killed in these provinces, either; according to the WDC, it is a staggering 80% of the marine creatures on the Japanese coast harvested so cruelly for meat and “pest control”.…

I had come to realization that maybe not all dolphins are the same. I was in class and the class was normal, the sharks were grouped together at the back, the dolphins were clustered together in front of the sharks and I was seated to the right of the class with the Clownfish. With the dolphins, usually in class their always gossiping about hair, beauty products and whatever the sharks do (usually centers around the gym) instead of actually listening during class or doing any of the work.
