In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare two characters in the play have some similarities but other than that they are almost polar opposites and those two characters are Hamlet and Laertes. Hamlet has to deal with a lot of problems throughout the play and one of them is dealing with his polar opposite counterpart Laertes and there is no easy solution to that problem. Laertes does have some justification for being angry at Hamlet because Hamlet in the play does break his sister heart which ultimately leads to her death and Hamlet did kill Laertes’ father. Hamlet in no way has any issue with Laertes up until their deaths when he figures out he was poisoned all Hamlet wants to do mostly is to avenge his fathers death by killing claudius. Some people may think that Hamlet and Laertes are similar but they are different in so many ways. Hamlet has many traits actions that he does in the play that set him far apart from Laertes and Hamlet is the more rational and calm of the two. Hamlet in the play distrusts his uncle Claudius who is now the king because he married his mother after his father died he also believes that Claudius killed his father. We know that this is apparent when Hamlet is talking to his mother Gertrude and Hamlet says “A murderer and a villain, A slave that is not twentieth part the tithe Of your precedent lord, a vice of kings, A cutpurse of the empire and the rule, That from a shelf the precious diadem stole,And put it in his pocket” (III,iv,97-102).
