Hairspray and the Bible both cover the topic of equality. These two works show how people should treat each other, and are both prevalent to today's world. Hairspray follows equality mostly by respect,tolerance, and acceptance, while the Bible is more by love, friendship, and reverence. Hairspray’s take on love is very simple: respect others. In one scene Motormouth Maybelle states, “Love is a gift, a lot of people don't remember that.” (Maybelle) From this we can be inferred that people in this film found love rare, and they were searching more for respect, than for love. The Bible agrees that we should respect all others, and the movie follows many good Catholic values. However, the Bible also stresses the need to love, not simply tolerate.
