“The Ups and downs of Society” Gwendolyn Brooks was an African american woman who lived from 1917 until 2000. She was born in kansas then moved to chicago where she died. She was married to Henry Lowington Blakely Jr. in 1939 and had two children, Henry and Nora. Throughout her life, she wrote many poems and even won a pulitzer prize in 1950. Gwendolyn Brooks is also the author of a poem called Sadie and Maud. This poem is about two sisters, but it is also about society’s effects on social standards. In society most women got jobs as teachers and the other women did not get any jobs at all. This poem shows that social standards during the 1900’s do not always lead to an enjoyable life, and that we should choose to live the life that we want to. The sisters in the poem, although they represent different life styles, they still are similar. Sadie and Maud are both African American women living in the 1900’s. In the quotes, “Maud went to college; Sadie stayed home,” we know that Maud was better educated while sadie was not since she stays home. While Maud goes to school gets a job and and follows the rules of society, and she does not end up happy, but lonely and sad. The quote,”Maud, who went to college,; Is a thin brown mouse.; She is living all alone; In this old house,” informs the reader that she did not live a happy life, even though she followed all of the social norms. Maud’s sister Sadie, on the other hand, ends up getting pregnant without being married, has two kids, and shames her family, as seen in the quotes, “ Sadie bore two babies,” and “ Maud and Ma and Papa; Nearly died of shame.” The sisters also were different since one followed society while the other decided to go against what she was taught to do, and became a renegade from
