However is he just a monster that’s “hoping to kill…?” (Glencoe, 394) or is Grendel a whole other monster , one who thinks, feels, and has desires just like any other person. This insight occurs in John Gardner’s “Grendel” which makes Grendel seem a lot more complex than Beowulf’s Grendel.…

This shows that Grendel, although a major character and plot point, has little to no depth in his characterization, where all he does is kill and be unhappy. This is different to Gardner's representation where Grendel has thoughts and feelings, he wants to find out why he lives and what the world around him is. This is evident in Grendel's questioning of his loneliness in the beginning of the novel, “Why can’t I have someone to talk to? I said. The stars said nothing, but I pretended to ignore the rudeness”(Gardner 53).…

This is a depressing, but vital part of the movie because this start of a movie enhances the beginning of how Grendel becomes the so called “troll” that the Danes refer to him as. Out of a growing feeling of hate and melancholy feelings mixed with desolation and deprivation, Grendel grew with the thought that he would someday avenge his father’s death caused by that Danish King. The screen writing that Grendel has a father forms this story into perfect shape because in the folk epic, Grendel just kills and fights everyone who steps in his way for example, “... one, a fiend out of hell, began to work his evil in the world.” (pg. 9) Those were the beliefs of the big and powerful monster in…

In the movie and poem, Beowulf offers to fight Grendel himself after explaining that he owes Hrothgar a favor because Hrothgar helped his father. In the poem; “Beowulf’s last battle”, he wants to be remembered as strong. Beowulf stated that he never knew fear, as a youth, he fought in endless battles but now that he is old he will still fight and seek for the fame. Meaning, he undergoes a lot of battles back then and now that he is old, his age won’t stop him from fighting. However, in the movie; he becomes more of a monster when he turned on himself by not being courageous when he needed to be, by allowing Grendel’s mother and succumbing to his weakness of beautiful women he causes a fire-breathing dragon to attack his land.…

He is portrayed as an epic hero that can withstand anything. In the movie, on the other hand, Beowulf lies and is sometimes very cowardly. It could be argued that this was done to humanize the character, but unfortunately this lead to Beowulf’s death against his son, the dragon, to be very unrighteous. Because he lied about killing Grendel’s mother, his character’s death isn’t as honorable as it was in the poem. It felt unsatisfying that he died the way he did.…
