Comparing 'Grendel And Textbook Version Of Beowulf'

Who killed Beowulf? Beowulf is an old epic story that tells the story of a young warrior who comes to help king Hrothgar’s kingdom that is being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. There is a movie and a textbook version of Beowulf. In the movie Grendel was king Hrothgar son; however Grendel was not related to king Hrothgar in any form in the text book version. Grendel’s mother was a very hideous looking person in the book; but in the movie she was portrayed as this beautiful woman made of gold. Beowulf had sexual relations with Grendel’s mother in the movie, therefore she had a child. Beowulf did not have any children in the textbook version. The textbook version of Beowulf has many key differences when compared to the movie Beowulf, for …show more content…
The first battle in the story of Beowulf is the battle between Beowulf and Grendel. Beowulf was the protagonist of this story; Beowulf was a geatish hero who claim to be the strongest ablest warrior around. Beowulf traveled to Denmark in aide of king Hrothgar who needed help defending his people against the terrible demon named Grendel. In the movie Grendel did not attack people when they were sleeping or at night; Grendel attacked during the welcoming party for Beowulf. However in the book Grendel was a coward who attacked people at night while they were sleeping. During the battle Beowulf’s warriors drawled their swords ready to attack the demon but the blades wouldn’t pierce Grendel’s skin; consequently Beowulf pounced on Grendel with his bare hands a started to attack the demon. Beowulf rips off the arm of Grendel out of his arm socket, and Grendel retreated back to his home in the swamp to die. In the book version of Beowulf Grendel’s mother live in a cave beneath a mere; however in the movie Grendel’s mother lived in a cave that wasn’t underwater. When Beowulf encountered Grendel’s mother in the book she immediately lunges at him and stared to crush him but he was protected by his armor. Grendel’s mother takes him away to her court in the process Beowulf tried to retrieve the sword to cut off Grendel’s mother head but he was unable to pierce her skin. Beowulf strategize and tried to use his bare hands but they the matching each others blows. Beowulf then saw a giant sword on the wall so he took it a swung with all his might to successfully decapitate the demon. However in the movie Grendel’s mother seduced Beowulf into having sexual relations with her resulting in a son. The last and most important battle in the story Beowulf was between Beowulf and the dragon. The reason this the most important battle is because this is Beowulf last battle he will ever have. Beowulf knew this would be his last battle because he said his goodbyes to his men and set off the battle with his armor on ready
