We as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” In this essay I will be explaining how this quote plays out in the texts that I have read. The quote, by Barbara Jordan, plays out in the texts “texas v. majority opinion” by William J. Brennan, and “What, of this goldfish, Would wish?” by Etgar Keret. In all three of my short stories people have a hard time accepting others and their differences. My first short story I will be talking about is Ender’s Game By Orson Scott. In this story people don’t accept Ender because he was born third in his family making him a third. He also has a chip in his neck that was put in there when he was born because having a third child where they’re from isn’t normal and is shunned upon by the people. “Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be.”…

Goldfish are susceptible to jumping out of their tanks, due to changes in their environment. Another argument is that goldfish are resilient and adaptable, thus the disorder in their routine is trivial. Children and college students are the two major groups that own these fish. Because of the child’s lack of responsibility and the students schedule, it is easy for the fish to become neglected. The main reasons a fish would engage in behavior such as suicide, is because of a lack of oxygen supply - by not using a filter - or being in continual darkness.…

In “Poor Fish,” Moravia introduces a ‘perfect couple,’ symbolized by normal society and are a foil of the protagonist and his girlfriend, Ida. The ‘odd couple’ and the ‘normal couple’ are attending a circus performance, where the protagonist notices the normal couple staring and laughing at them. This bothers the protagonist, but as the show continues, the ridicule begins to worsen as they begin to laugh harder and whisper critical judgement to one another. After the show, Poor Fish decides to confront the couple and ask why they were judging him and his girlfriend during the show, and their response was, “… we were laughing at a frog pretending to be an ox” (Moravia).…
