Comparing Glaspell's Trifles And The Story Of An Hour

Glaspell’s play “Trifles” and Chopin’s short story “The Story of an Hour” both have a tone of the oppressed relations in the stories and the adverse response of the woman’s feeling towards the men and their relationship. Both stories focus on the feeling of freedom of breaking free of their marriage that had caused them to be upset because of the hurt their husbands had caused them. The stories both reflect on the ideas and feeling both women had about their marriages and the freedom they felt when they got to break free of the marriage; while the writers interpreted how women were treated in that time through their stories. In the short story “The Story of an Hour,” the wife had been praying for a long time to be free from her husband; when the announcement came that her husband had died she could not believe it and was beyond happy until realizing her husband was not actually dead. The bird was the tipping point in her relationship with her husband; for years, the wife had been through emotional and physical abuse but never had the courage to leave him so she killed him. Throughout the short story, the investigators made derogatory remarks about how the women were not normal housewives; during the time this story was written was the opening of the women's rights movement (Sara Abu Khalaf) . Glaspell used the characters in “Trifles” to help reflect how men were in the 1916’s (Cody Naylo). During the 1916’s, men were dominate and oppressive towards women; the characters in the short story, for example the cops treatment towards the women, show real life affiliations women had to deal with on a day to day basis (Sara Abu Khalaf). Glaspell’s short story use an underlying tone of oppression and inequality women went through and the story is helping the women’s movement
